Mary Ellen Marcum was born on 8 Mar 1865 in Louisville, KentuckyG.4,5,6
No record has been found listing Mary with her parents. We know her father's name only from her death certificate, provided by her son Fred. Her mother's name is shown as unknown. Several John Macum's can be found in Kentucky records of the period, but none can be identified as her father. This suggests that her mother died soon after her birth, and possibly her father as well. Her first son's middle name was Thrasher, suggesting that may have been her mother's maiden name. There were Trasher families in Kentucky, but no connection has been found to them either.9,12
There is a Mary E. Marcum, age 8 and born in Kentucky, on the 1870 Federal Census of Lawrence Co., KentuckyG, enumerated 21 Apr 1870, that could be her. She is listed in the household of John and Nancy Wallace and their daughter Ida. Attempts to find a link between either of them and Mary's parents have been unsuccessful. She is not listed with them in 1880.13
There is a Mary E. Markum, age 17 and born in Kentucky appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Bowling Green, Warren Co., Kentucky G, enumerated 6 Jun 1880, that could be her. She is listed in a school headed by Angelica Dwyer, Sister Superior. There are also five Sisters of Charity, two other girls, and a servant, listed in the establishment.14
Mary married Frederick John Fenker, son of Johann Hinrich Wilhelm Fennker and Johanna Louise Baum, about 1881.7,8
Mary and Frederick moved to Michigan by 1900.15 They appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan, at 695 Hecla St. G, enumerated 7 Jun 1900, reporting they rented their home. Their children Grafton, Arthur, and Fred were listed as living with them.16

Her children Arthur and Fred were listed as living with her, as were Arthur's son, Grafton, and Flora and Oscar Anderson, who were listed as boarders.21
Mary died on 5 Jun 1921 in 17444 Norton Ave, Lakewood, Cuyahoga Co., OhioG, at age 56, at home.9 She was buried on 7 Jun 1921 in Riverside Cemetery, Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OhioG.10,11
