Calvin D. Cobb was born on 26 Feb 1791 in Pawlet, VermontG.5,6,7 He was probably the male under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Ebenezer Cobb, in the 1800 Federal Census of Shelburne, Chittenden Co., VermontG.13

The War of 1812 --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

According to family tradition Calvin was a Captain in the War of 1812. We do know that in Mar and Apr 1813 he transported troops, stores, and medical supplies for Gen. Chandler's command from Burlington, VermontG, to Brownsville, near Sacketts Harbor, New York, for which he was paid for16 days at 24ยข per day. He enlisted as a corporal in Capt. James Taylor's Company, 30th Infantry Regiment on 29 Apr 1813 at Burlington, Vermont and was discharged at Vergenes, Vermont 1 May 1814, serving at Plattsburgh, New York and in Canada.14,15,16
He was an early captain of the regiment formed in Susquehanna Co.G in 1811, but since he did not mention that service in his pension application, it sees doubtful that he arrived in the county by the time of that unit's involvement in the war. The regiment was dispatched 23 Oct 1814, but reached only as far as Danville, Pennsylvania, some 85 miles, when it received orders to halt, and was then dismissed 24 Nov, afterwards being ridiculed for its fruitlessness.17

The Move to Pennsylvania --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Family tradition also holds that Calvin and his brother Derrick moved from Vermont to Birchardville, Susquehanna Co., PennsylvaniaG, and settled on a farm there which was later occupied by Calvin's grandson. They each purchased land in Susquehanna Co., Derrick in 1816 and Calvin 1817, but it is not clear this is the same land later owned by Calvin. In 1820 Calvin appeared in the census in Middlesex Twp., which then included Birchardville, but without his brother. By 1830 Derrick was some 25 miles southwest in Bradford Co.18,19,20,21 (See map.)
Calvin purchased 50 acres of land in Bridgewater Twp., Susquehanna Co., PennsylvaniaG, on 12 Mar 1817, from Ebenezer Whipple and his wife Susanna, for $1 and a mortgage for $500.4
Calvin married Phoebe Stone on 29 Jun 1817 in Middletown, Susquehanna Co., PennsylvaniaG.8,9,10
Calvin appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Middletown, Susquehanna Co., PennsylvaniaG, with a household consisting of one white male under age 10 (unknown), one 26 to 45 (himself), and one white female age 16 to 26 (wife Phoebe.)22
Calvin appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Middletown, Susquehanna Co., PennsylvaniaG, with a household consisting of two males under age age 5 (son Andrew and another), two age 5 to 10 (Elmer and another), and one age 30 to 40 (himself), one female age 10 to 15 (unknown), and one age 30 to 40 (wife Phoebe.)23
He appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Middletown Twp., Susquehanna Co., PennsylvaniaG, with a household consisting of one male under age 5 to 20 (son Nathan), two 10 to 15 (Andrew and another), one age 15 to 20 (Elmer), one age 40 to 50 (himself), one female age 15 to 20 (unknown), and one age 40 to 50 (wife Phoebe.)24
Calvin and Phoebe appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Middletown Twp., Susquehanna Co., PennsylvaniaG, enumerated 5 Dec 1850, reporting real estate valued at $2,500. Their son Nathan was listed as living with them.1
On 6 Jun 1855, while living at Middletown, PennsylvaniaG, Calvin applied for bounty land for his service as a teamster in the War of 1812. He made his application under the bounty land act of 3 Mar 1855, which offered 160 acres to those who had served at least 14 days, and specifically included teamsters serving the military in those eligible. Recipients were allowed to sell their rights under these grants, and bounty land was not available near where he lived, so we can assume that Calvin sold his grant.25,26
The post office at BirchardvilleG was established in 1847, with John S. Birchard as postmaster. Calvin succeeded him in 1857 and served until 1861.27
Calvin and Phoebe appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Forest Lake, Susquehanna Co., PennsylvaniaG, enumerated 19 Jul 1860, reporting real estate valued at $2,700 and personal estate of $1,050. They were apparently living close to their son Elmer and his family, as they are listed as the previous entry on the census record.28
Calvin and Phoebe appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Forest Lake, Susquehanna Co., PennsylvaniaG, enumerated 11 Aug 1870, reporting real estate valued at 44,000. Their son Elmer was listed as living with them, with his second wife, Norcissa Fish, their children Laura, Vilroy, and Newton, and Laura's daughter Anna Newton. Also listed was Jane Fish, a domestic servant age 23, who may have been a relative of Elmer's wife.29
On 26 Apr 1871, while living at Forest Lake Twp., Susquehanna Co., PennsylvaniaG, Calvin applied for a pension for his service as a corporal in the War of 1812. His pension of $8 per month was granted 27 Nov 1871, effective 14 Feb of that year.30
Calvin appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Forest Lake, Susquehanna Co., Pennsylvania G, in the household of Elmer A. Cobb and Elizabeth Culver, his son and his third wife.31
     He was a farmer.32,33,34,35,36,37
Calvin died on 30 Jul 1880 at age 89.11,12 He was buried in Stone Street Cemetery, Forest Lake, Susquehanna Co., PennsylvaniaG, next to his wife.11

Children:
      Children with Phoebe Stone

Given the number of unidentified children in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 census, it seems likely that there were other children in addition to those listed here.

Key Events:

Birth: 1 Feb 1789, Pawlet, Vermont,4,5,6
Marriage: abt 1820, Cynthia Beeman (b. 1 Jul 1803)7,8
Death: 17 Jun 1868, Pennsylvania,9
Burial: Stevensville Cemetery, Stevensville, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania,3,10

Narrative:

It is clear that Derrick's parents use the spelling Darick, as that is what was used in the family Bible, and in records for his older brother of the same name. However he seems to have used the spelling Derrick as an adult. Many Internet genealogies also attribute the name Richard to him, but that appears to be entirely based on the 1850 census, which shows that name for him. That record contains many other errors, which discredit it as a reliable source.11,12,2,1,3 He was born on 1 Feb 1789 in Pawlet, VermontG.4,5,6
He was probably one of the three males under age 16 listed in the household of his father, Ebenezer Cobb, in the 1790 Federal Census of Pawlet, Rutland Co., VermontG.13 He was probably one of the two males age 10 to 15 listed in the household of his father in the 1800 Federal Census of Shelburne, Chittenden Co., VermontG.14
Derrick Cobb served in the War of 1812, having enlisted in VermontG.15
According to family tradition, Derrick and his brother Calvin moved from Vermont to Birchardville, Susquehanna Co., PennsylvaniaG, and settled on a farm there which was later occupied by Calvin's grandson. They each purchased land in Susquehanna Co., Derrick in 1816 and Calvin 1817, but it is not clear this is the same land later owned by Calvin. In 1820 Calvin appeared in the census in Middlesex Twp., which then included Birchardville, but without his brother. By 1830 Derrick was some 25 miles southwest in Bradford Co.16,17,18,2 (See map.)
On 3 Sep 1816 Derrick purchased 17 acres and 7 perches of land in Bridgewater Twp., Susquehanna Co., PennsylvaniaG, from the estate of John Ewing, for $51.1
Derrick married Cynthia Beeman, daughter of Dr. Ebenezer Beeman and Hannah Lum, about 1820.7,8 If he ever lived there he moved to Bradford Co.G by 1830. Derrick appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Wyalusing, Bradford Co., PennsylvaniaG, with a household consisting of two males under age 5 (sons Jaxon and Ebenezer), two age 5 to 10 (Winchester and Perry), one age 40 to 50 (himself), one female age 5 to 10 (daughter Harriett), one age 10 to 15 (unknown), and one age 20 to 30 (wife Cynthia.)2
Derrick appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Wyalusing, Bradford Co., PennsylvaniaG, with a household consisting of two males age 10 to 15 (sons Ebenezer and Jaxon), two age 15 to 20 (Winchester and Perry), one age 50 to 60 (himself), and one female under age 5 (daughter Arlena), one age 5 to 10 (Minerva), one age 15 to 20 (Harriett), and one age 30 to 40 (wife Cynthia.)19
Derrick and Cynthia appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Wyalusing, Bradford Co., PennsylvaniaG, enumerated 17 Oct 1850, reporting real estate valued at $500. Their children Harriett, Ebenezer, Jaxon, Minerva, Edward, and Emily were listed as living with them, While the record contains some inconsistencies (the head of household is shown as Richard Cobb, and he is shown 5 years too young), comparison with other census records suggests this was in fact their household.20
Derrick and Cynthia appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Stevensville, Bradford Co., PennsylvaniaG, enumerated 25 Jun 1860, reporting real estate valued at $1,000 and personal estate of $552. Their children Edward and Emily were listed as living with them, as were Emma Clink, age 6, and Perry Clink, age 3. A Clink family is listed close by the Cobbs in 1840, so these could be grandchildren if one of their daughters married a neighbor's son. They were apparently living close by their sons Winchester and Perry and their families, as they are both listed within a few households on the census record.21,22
     He was a farmer.23,24
Derrick died on 17 Jun 1868 in PennsylvaniaG at age 79.9 He was buried in Stevensville Cemetery, Stevensville, Bradford Co., PennsylvaniaG.3,10
