Hearing the commotion, Adam's wife in the house sent her sons, Edward and Louis, to the barn. As they approached the barn William came out with his horse. He spoke pleasantly of the weather, asked as to their health and, getting through the gate, rode off. Edward ran into the barn, heard his father groan and found him voiceless and dying at the top of the stairs.18,19,20

Friedrich Goller1,2,3,4

ID# 7389, (1823 - 1902)

Parents:

FatherJohann Georg Goller (14 Aug 1799 - 2 Feb 1875)
MotherBarbara Grether (17 Nov 1793 - 24 Apr 1862)

Key Events:

Birth: 17 Aug 1823, Hollstein, Baden,5,6,7
Marriage: 1856, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Fredericka Schelling (b. 9 Oct 1835, d. 5 Dec 1924)8,9,10
Death: 5 Feb 1902, Peoria, Illinois,11,12
Burial: Springdale Cemetery, Peoria, Illinois,13

Narrative:

Friedrich Goller was born on 17 Aug 1823 in Hollstein, BadenG.5,6,7 He was baptized on 1 Sep 1823 in Steinen, BadenG.5
Friedrich immigrated from Baden about 1854.14,15 He was baptized as Johann Friedrich but after immigrating he used his middle name, Friedrich, exclusively.16,17,18
Friedrich married Fredericka Schelling, daughter of Johann Daniel Schelling and Eva Margaretha Mag, in 1856 in Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaG.8,9,10
Friedrich and Fredericka moved with their baby daughter Caroline to Illinois about 1859.19 They appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Peoria, Peoria Co., IllinoisG, enumerated 25 Jul 1860, reporting real estate valued at $650 and personal estate valued at $250. Their children Caroline and Emma were listed as living with them.2
By 1861 Friedrich and Fredericka were living in 337 North MonroeG.20 They moved to Douglas and Main Sts.G about 1865 then to Douglas and Farmington Rd., a location that cannot now be identified, about 1867.21
Friedrich was a smith, or metal worker, and apparently a quite versatile one. He was listed in city directories and census records as a blacksmith most often, but the entries are intermixed with those showing him as a machinist, whitesmith (one who works with metal, primarily tin), lock maker and gunsmith.22,23,24,25 Friedrich registered for the draft for the Civil War, appearing on the register dated in Jun 1863, while living in Peoria, IllinoisG, reporting he was employed as a locksmith.26
In 1867 he was listed in what was apparently a short-lived partnership with Edgar Weatherl under the name of Weatheral and Goller. They operated a gunsmithing business at 90 Fulton St.G. Friedrich was listed as a blacksmith, lock maker, and whitesmith at that location in the preceding years, and Weatherl had operated similar businesses there as well. By 1868 Weatherl had a new partner.27
In the early 1870's Friedrich operated a "repairing" business at Bridge and Washington Sts.G, What types of goods he was repairing is not clear.28

He was listed for several years in the late 1880's as working as a blacksmith for James Selby & Co., manufacturers of the Union Corn Planter, at Washington and Oak Sts.G. None of the other records show him with an employer, nor with a separate business address, so it is unclear whether he was working on his own account or for others during those years.29
Friedrich and Fredericka appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Peoria, Peoria Co., IllinoisG, enumerated 6 Jul 1870, reporting real estate valued at $600 and personal estate valued at $400. Their children Caroline, Emma, Johanna, Elizabeth, Henry, and Charles were listed as living with them.3 By 1871 they were living in Antoinette and Louisa Sts.G.30
Friedrich and Fredericka moved about 1872 to 208 North St.G, and continued to live there until about 1880.31 They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Peoria, Peoria Co., Illinois, at 208 North St., enumerated 5 Jun 1880. Their children Caroline, Johanna, Elizabeth, Henry, Charles, Mary, Flora, Minnie, and Edna were listed as living with them.32
Friedrich and Fredericka moved to 920 Knoxville Rd.G about 1881.33 They moved to 414 South Bourland St.G, by 1885.34 They moved to 313 South Orange St.G, by 1889, where they lived for about ten years.35
The last city directory in which Friedrich is listed with an occupation was 1895. It appears that he retired about that time.36
Friedrich and Fredericka's daughter Flora died in childbirth in 1897 and they took in the child, Florence Welty. After his death Fredericka continued to raise the child, who lived with her until her death, with her husband after she married in 1916.37,38
Friedrich and Fredericka moved to 414 Kellogg Ave.G on the outskirts of the city, about 1900.39 They appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Peoria Twp., Peoria Co., Illinois, on Kellogg St., enumerated 20 Jun 1900, reporting that they owned their home, which was mortgaged. Their children Johanna and Minnie were listed as living with them, as was granddaughter Florence Welty.1
Friedrich died on 5 Feb 1902 in Peoria, IllinoisG, at age 78.11,12 He was buried in Springdale Cemetery, Peoria, IllinoisG.13
