Edy Stanley1,2,3

ID# 2170, (abt 1776 - 1850)

Parents:

FatherJohn Stanley
MotherSilldra

Key Events:

Birth: abt 1776,4,5
Marriage: 10 Nov 1791, Halifax Co., John Tuck (b. abt 1763, d. 6 Jul 1822)6

Narrative:

Edy Stanley was born about 1776.4,5
Edy married John Tuck, son of Thomas Tuck and Sarah, on 10 Nov 1791 in Halifax Co.G, with Thomas Dobson officiating.6
She was probably the female over age 45 listed in the household of her husband, John Tuck, in the 1820 Federal Census of Meadsville, Halifax Co., VirginiaG.7
Edy applied for a pension based on her husband's Revolutionary War service on 23 Jun 1840. Her application was made under the Pension Act of 7 Jun 1832, which granted half pay to certain widows. Her application was based on her own statement and those of her husband's brother Thomas. John Bain made a statement 11 Apr 1843 showing he had served with John.8
Her claim seems to have languished unresolved, for on 28 Apr 1845 her late husband's brother William made a new affidavit in support, and on 9 May 1845 she wrote to the Commissioner of Pensions asking whether her claim had ever been approved, and if not what documentation was needed. She said she was old, infirm, and "in very needy and destitute circumstances." She said if she did not receive assistance she would "be compelled to become a pauper, for I am unable to support myself."9
On 24 Apr 1850 she made a new application under the act of 20 Feb 1848. That application was approved 29 May 1850, for a pension of $20.00 annually, to be paid from 4 Mar 1848.10
