Thomas Tuck1

ID# 1891, ( - btn 1786 and 1788)

Key Events:

Birth: Caroline Co., Virginia,2
Marriage: Sarah (d. bef Jun 1792)3
Death: btn 25 Apr 1786 and 22 Sep 1788, Halifax Co., Virginia,4

Narrative:

Thomas Tuck was born in Caroline Co., VirginiaG.2
Thomas came to Halifax Co., VirginiaG, before 1749, on which date his name is found on a list of tithables. He apparently previously lived in Caroline Co.5,6
In Halifax Co.G he opened a road in 1756 known as Cowford Road near Bannister River and also sold a tract of land on the riverfront. In 1764 he was an official in the election for members of the House of Burgesses.5
     Thomas married Sarah.3
Thomas was one of the securities for John Tuck when he posted bond as executor of his brother Edward on 18 Oct 1781.7
Thomas left a will dated 25 Apr 1786, in which he "lent" his entire estate to his wife Sarah for her lifetime, after which it was to be divided between his children. The 150-acre tract where he lived, together with his personal estate, such as slaves, was to go to son Thomas. His "stock of cattle, horses, hogs and household goods, etc." was to be distributed equally to his other children. He named George Camp as executor.1
Thomas died between 25 Apr 1786 and 22 Sep 1788 in Halifax Co., VirginiaG.4
His will was probated on 22 Sep 1788.8
An inventory of his estate was made on 19 Jun 1792 and filed with the Halifax Co.G Court the following week. No reason was stated for the four-year delay, but since it was not to be distributed until the death of his wife it may be that she had then died. The appraisal totaled £374 11s 9d, listing slaves, horses, cattle, hogs, furniture and tools. Most of the value listed was for the slaves: a man named Ruben at £80, a woman named Nancy at £40, a woman Isbill and child Lewis at £90, and three girls and boys at £40, £30, and £25.9
Research Note, 18 Nov 2008:
It has been proposed that Dr. Davis Green Tuck was descended from Thomas Tuck, in part based on the assertion that Davis's plantation was in the section in which Thomas took up land in the 1750's, and was bisected by Cowford Rd., which was opened by Thomas in 1756. But the land Davis held there was a gift from his wife's father, not inherited from his own family. Thomas had three sons, Thomas, John, and William, so if Davis was his grandson, no evidence has been found to establish which of them might have been Davis' father.10,11
Research Note:

John and Edward Tuck were clearly brothers. Thomas was probably their brother too, though the only direct evidence supporting this conclusion is very weak: that Thomas was security for John when he was executor of Edward's will. Bennett, Josiah, and Cary Tuck were contemporaries and are also thought to have been their brothers, but no evidence of that has been found. According to family tradition their father was Bennett Tuck, and according to some accounts their mother was Hannah Cary. Bennett and Cary are common given names in the family through many later generations, lending credence to these beliefs. There was a Bennett Tuck mentioned in the Journal of the House of Burgesses on 6 Jun 1740, and a Bennett Tuck signed a petition from Halifax Co. to the General Assembly in 1776.12,13,14
