     Maria W. Davis was born about 1843 in Virginia.7,8,9,10,11 She married George C. Ayres, son of William Ayres and Julia A. (surname unknown), and a brother of the man her sister Sally married.12,13

     She appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of her parents, Jacob Davis and Catherine E. Toot.14,15 She appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Danville, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, in the household of her parents, Jacob Davis and Catherine E. Toot.16,17
     Maria and George C. Ayres appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Danville, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 30 Jun 1870, reporting real estate valued at $16,000 and personal estate of $800. Their children William and Sallie were listed as living with them, as were her parents, Jacob Davis and Catherine E. Toot.18
     Maria and George appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Danville, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 2 Jun 1880. Their children William and Sallie were listed as living with them, as were four Black servants.19
