     George C. Ayres was born about 1838 in Virginia.6,7,8 He married Maria W. Davis, daughter of Jacob Davis and Catherine E. Toot, and a sister of the woman his brother David married.9,10

     He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Danville, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, in the household of his parents, William Ayres and Julia A. (surname unknown).11,12 He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, in the household of his parents.13,14
     George and Maria W. Davis appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Danville, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 30 Jun 1870, reporting real estate valued at $16,000 and personal estate of $800. Their children William and Sallie were listed as living with them, as were her parents, Jacob Davis and Catherine E. Toot.3
     George and Maria appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Danville, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 2 Jun 1880. Their children William and Sallie were listed as living with them, as were four Black servants.15
     He was a dealer or manufacturer of tobacco.16,17,18
