     John Buchanan Smith was born on 16 Jan 1883 in Platte Co., Missouri.8,9,10
     He moved to Oklahoma with his parents before 1900. He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Iowa Twp., Lincoln Co., Oklahoma, in the household of his parents, John Smith and Susan Ann Benner.4
     He was listed as a farmer in the 1900 census, presumably working on the family farm. In the 1910 census he was listed as farm laborer, working out, apparently meaning he was working for others.15,16
     He returned to Missouri with his mother, apparently after the death of his father. He appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Carroll Twp., Platte Co., Missouri, in the household of his mother.7
     John has not been found in the 1920 census. He was not living with mother, who was living in Preston Twp., Platte Co., Missouri, with his older brother Lee.17
     John married first Francis Anna Morris, daughter of William A. Morris and Margaret Jennie Reigle, on 24 Jul 1926 in Leavenworth, Kansas. She had previously been married to Marion Elberg Jennings.11,12,13
     John and Francis have not been found in the 1930 census.
     John and Francis appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., Missouri, at 754½ 8th St., enumerated 1940, reporting they were renting their home, for $8 per month, and had lived in the same city in 1935.18
     He was a laborer in 1940, working for the W.P.A. He reported he had been out of work 52 weeks, but had worked 13 weeks the prior year, earning $268.18 In the 1950 census he reported his occupation as a janitor at a private home, reporting he had worked 50 hours the prior week.19
     John and Francis appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of St Joseph, Buchanan Co., Missouri, at 310 So 9th, enumerated 15 Apr 1950, reporting they lived in a home that was not on a farm.20
     His wife died on 7 Jun 1953 in 3236 Penn St., St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., Missouri.21,22
     John married second Francis Elizabeth Brown, daughter of Benjamin A. Brown and Mary Stines. She was the widow of William Simmons.14
     John died on 29 Jun 1956 in Tracy, Platte Co., Missouri, at age 73.5 He was buried on 2 Jul 1956 in Saint Joseph Memorial Park, St Joseph, Buchanan Co., Missouri.5
