Narrative:
Alfred William Fenker was born on 15 May 1881 in Covington, Kentucky.7,8,9He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, in the household of his parents, John William Fenker and Amelia Louise Wieman.4
He was a clerk by 1898, when he was still a student. After finishing school he tried a number of occupations. By 1905 he was a salesman for E. K. Morris & Co., file manufacturers and wholesale and retail dealers in metals and metalworking tools, at 317 W 2nd.16,17,18 By the following year he was a clerk at The Pounsford Stationary Co., stationers, engravers, printers and binders, at 133 E 4th.19
By 1909 he was listed as a manufacturer's agent for enamelware, at 10 E 2nd St., and listed separately as a merchandise broker at the same address. In 1910 he reported his occupation as a salesman for an exhaust manufacturing company.20,21,22
He appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, in the household of his parents.23
Alfred married Jessie Blanch Billiter, daughter of Allen Billiter and Mary Ann Burnett, on 14 Jun 1910 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, with Rev. W. D. Malcom, minister of the Presbyterian Church.10,11,12
In 1911 he was listed as a manufacturer of syrup for soda fountains at 913 W. Court St.. That business seems to have been short-lived, as by 1913 he found what became his career for many years, being a salesman. He was working for The Ira D. Washburn Co., which dealt in paints, window glass, oils, and varishes.24,25 Alfred registered for the draft for World War I on 7 Sep 1918, while living in 1615 Potter Place, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, reporting he was employed as a traveling salesman, for the Ira D. Washburn Co., 906 Central Ave., Cincinnati.3
Alfred and Jessie appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at 1615 Potter Place, enumerated 3 Jan 1920, with Jessie's mother, Mary Ann Burnett, listed as living with them.26
He was a stock regulator for an auto tire company by 1920. By 1922 he had returned to sales, becoming a traveling salesman for The Standard Fruit Product Co., a position he held through the 1930's.27,28,29
Alfred and Jessie appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at 2622 Grover Hill Ave., enumerated 9 Apr 1930, reporting the family owned a home worth $8,000, and a radio set. Their children Edward and Mildred were listed as living with them, Jessie's mother, Mary Ann Burnett, was also in the household.30
Alfred and Jessie appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at 2622 Grover Hill, enumerated 3 May 1940, reporting they owned a home valued at $6,000, and that they had lived in the same house in 1935. Their children Edward and Mildred were listed as living with them, as was her mother.31
By 1940 he was a salesman for Licht & Wankelman, jobbers of toys, fireworks, school supplies and novelties. That year he reported he had worked 24 hours the last week of March, and 30 weeks the prior year, earning $500.32,33
Alfred registered for the draft for World War II on 26 Apr 1942, while living at 2622 Grover Hill Ave., Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, reporting he was employed by Ferro Concrete Construction Co., at 3rd and Elm, Cincinnati.34
He was a cutter for Robertson Factories, curtain makers by 1948, working there the rest of his career. He reported in the 1950 census he had worked 40 hours the prior week, 52 weeks in 1949, earning $1,900 in wages or salary.35,36,37
Alfred and Jessie appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at Grover Hill Ave., enumerated 15 Apr 1950, reporting they lived in a home that was not on a farm and they lived in the same house the year before.38
Alfred died on 8 Feb 1954 in 5535 Montgomery Rd., Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at age 72, in the offices of his physician.13,14,15 He was buried on 11 Feb 1954 in Cemetery of Spring Grove, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, in the family plot owned by his mother.5
