No record of his parents having married has been found, and his birth record has the name of his father was omitted and shows him with his mother's surname.1 His father's name seems to have been acknowledged as he was known as Lee Leighman or Layman at least on some occasions.14
George's mother married William W. Terrell on 2 Dec 1891. After the marriage William took the boy as his son. Whether or not there was a formal adoption is unknown.15,4
The family has not been found in the 1900 census, though it seems likely they were living in Highland Co., Ohio.
Lee married Matilda Brose, daughter of William Joseph H. Brose and Edna Caroline Shaffer, on 1 Apr 1905 in Highland Co., Ohio, with Rev. P. J. Schriver officiating.8,9
It appears he had been using the name Lee Terrell for some time, and he had it legal changed to that 6 Apr 1905 in Highland County Probate court.2,14,16

Lee and Matilda moved to Dayton before 1920. They appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Dayton, Montgomery Co., Ohio, at 117 Galloway St., enumerated 7 Jan 1920, reporting they rented their home. Their son Charles was listed as living with them.19
He was a tool grinder at a pneumatic tools company by 1920, and doing the same work for an auto accessories company by 1930.20,21
Lee and Matilda appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Dayton, Montgomery Co., Ohio, at 254 Lafayette, enumerated 10 Apr 1930, reporting they rented their home, for $50 per month, and did not own a radio. Their son Charles was listed as living with them, as were his mother and her father.22

They appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Waynesville, Warren Co., Ohio, on Main St., enumerated 18 Apr 1940, reporting they owned a home valued at $2,200, and that they had lived in Dayton, Montgomery Co., Ohio in 1935. His mother and her widowed brother Edward were listed as living with them, as were two school teachers, Lucille Walton and Earline Lonham, who were listed as lodgers.23
He listed no occupation in 1940, but reported he had worked 30 weeks the prior year, earning $1,580. He reported in the 1950 census he was unable to work.23,24

Research Note, 5 Aug 2024:
The name of George's birth father is known only from his application for marriage license, which shows it as George Layman, and implied by his legal name change from Lee Leighman to Lee Terrell. The conclusion that he was George Henry Layman, born 12 May 1861 in Danville, Highland Co., Ohio and died 15 Aug 1954 in Roanoke, Virginia (then spelling his surname as Leighman), is based soley on the following:
  • He is the only "George Layman" found in the area of appropriate age
  • He lived with his parents at Danville, Highland Co., Ohio in 1880 while George's mother lived with her father and stepmother in Salem Twp., Highland Co., less then 10 miles away
  • He married another woman 4 Mar 1886 in Highland Co.29,30,31,14
