     John Fenton Johnson was born on 2 Nov 1829 in Castleton, Vermont.6,7,8
     He was probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Lyman Johnson, in the 1830 Federal Census of Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont.17 He was probably one of the two males age 10 to15 listed in the household of his father in the 1840 Federal Census of Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont.18
     He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont, in the household of his parents, Lyman Johnson and Malona W. Eaton.19
     John married first Mary Francis A. Remington, daughter of John Henry Remington and Betsey Mariah Stevens, on 8 Jun 1859.9,2,10
     John and Mary appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont, enumerated 12 Jul 1860, reporting real estate valued at $800 and personal estate of $400.20
     John enlisted in Co. F, 14th Vermont Infantry as a private 18 Aug 1862, at Castleton, Vermont, for a term of nine months.21,22,23 The 14th regiment arrived in Washington, DC, 25 Oct 1862, and was assigned to picket duty in various locations in northern Virginia around the city.24
     John became sick and was left at the U. S. Army General Hospital, Frederick, Maryland, 29 Jun 1863 as the Regiment was on it's way to Gettysburg. He apparently missed that battle. When he returned to his unit is unclear.25,26
     Having reached the end of its nine-months enlistment, the Regiment was released 18 Jul and returned to Brattleboro, Vermont, arriving there 21 Jul. John was mustered out there with his unit 30 Jul 1863.27,28
     He became a farmer in when he returned from the War.29,5,30,31
     John and Mary moved to Hubbardton, Vermont, the next town north, about 1866. They appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Hubbardton, Rutland Co., Vermont, enumerated 18 Jun 1870, reporting real estate valued at $4,500 and personal estate of $1,000. Their children Lyman, Emma, James, Clara and Ida were listed as living with them.32
     John served as postmaster in Hubbardton from 1871 until he resigned in Oct 1879 as he was preparing to move west.33,34,35
     John and Mary moved to Minnesota in 1879.36,37 They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Spring Creek, Otter Tail Co., Minnesota, enumerated 1 Jun 1880. Their children Lyman, James, Clara, Ida, Charles and Sarah were listed as living with them, as was Robert Stratton, a blacksmith, who was listed as a boarder.38
     He was a saw mill worker when he first moved to Minnesota, but had returned to farming by 1895. In 1900 he was a laborer, and was retired by 1905.39,40,41,42
     John and Mary appeared on the 1885 State Census of Scambler, Otter Tail Co., Minnesota, enumerated 1 May 1885. Their children Lyman, James, Ida, Charles and Sarah were listed as living with them.43
     John applied for an invalid pension based on his Civil War service on 30 Jul 1890, which was subsequently approved.44
     John and Mary appeared on the 1895 State Census of Scrambler, Otter Tail Co., Minnesota, enumerated 7 Jun 1895. Their children Charles and Sarah were listed as living with them, as was Sarah's husband James Elsworth.45
     His wife died on 19 Apr 1900 in Cormorant, Minnesota.46,47,48
     John appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Cormorant, Becker Co., Minnesota, enumerated 4 Jun 1900, listed as one of two boarders in the household of Solomon A. Halgren and his family.49
     John married second Angelia Rosettha Kilborn, daughter of Rufus A. Kilborn and Lydia M. Reynolds, on 5 Apr 1905, while he was on a trip east visiting family. They had been sweethearts when young, but both had married others.11,12
     John and Angelia appeared on the 1905 State Census Cormorant, Becker Co., Minnesota, enumerated 2 Jun 1905. His son Charles was listed as living with them.50
     John and Angelia returned to Castleton but he died while arranging for a place to live there.5
     John died on 25 Sep 1907 in Castleton at age 77.13,14 He was buried on 28 Oct 1907 in Hillside Cemetery, Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont.15,16
