Narrative:

Mary Francis A. Remington was born about 1841 in Indianapolis, Indiana.8,9,10,11
She appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont, in the household of her parents, John Henry Remington and Betsey Mariah Stevens.18
Her mother died on 22 Mar 1852, when Mary was about 11 years old.19,20,21
The will of her mother's maternal grandfather, Lemuel Ransom, left her use for her lifetime of the Pond Farm in Castleton, containing about 96 acres, and a piece of wood land of about 15 acres. At her death the land was to be equally divided between her heirs. A copy of the will was recorded in Castleton deed books 28 Feb 1859, apparently to document transfer of ownership of the farm to Mary and her four siblings. It seems likely that it was recorded after a delay of seven years from her death was because the eldest them was then reaching legal age.22
Mary sold her one-fifth interest in the Pond Farm to her father on 1 Mar 1859, for $500.2 On 27 Apr 1859 he mortgaged the one-fifth interest in the Pond Farm, and another two-acre parcel, to her to secure notes for $500, to be repaid with interest in annual installments on 1 Aug 1860 through 1868. The mortgage was marked paid in full 13 Apr 1864.23
Mary married John Fenton Johnson, son of Lyman Johnson and Malona W. Eaton, on 8 Jun 1859.12,13,14
Mary and John appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont, enumerated 12 Jul 1860, reporting real estate valued at $800 and personal estate of $400.24
Mary and John moved to Hubbardton, Vermont, the next town north, about 1866. They appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Hubbardton, Rutland Co., Vermont, enumerated 18 Jun 1870, reporting real estate valued at $4,500 and personal estate of $1,000. Their children Lyman, Emma, James, Clara and Ida were listed as living with them.25
Mary and John moved to Minnesota in 1879.26,27 They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Spring Creek, Otter Tail Co., Minnesota, enumerated 1 Jun 1880. Their children Lyman, James, Clara, Ida, Charles and Sarah were listed as living with them, as was Robert Stratton, a blacksmith, who was listed as a boarder.28

Mary and John appeared on the 1895 State Census of Scrambler, Otter Tail Co., Minnesota, enumerated 7 Jun 1895. Their children Charles and Sarah were listed as living with them, as was Sarah's husband James Elsworth.30
