     John J. Morton was born on 28 Oct 1834 in Switzerland Co., Indiana.4,5,6,7
     John married first Emma C. Cobb, daughter of Willard Burr Cobb and Submit S. Garlinghouse, on 11 Apr 1861 in Ripley Co., Indiana.8,9,10
     He was a blacksmith.16,17 He registered for the draft for the Civil War, appearing on the register dated in Jun 1863, while living in Jackson Co., Indiana, reporting he was employed as a blacksmith.18
     John and Emma appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Jackson Twp., Decatur Co., Indiana, enumerated 20 Jun 1870, reporting real estate valued at $1,200 and personal estate of $800. Their children James, Anna and Willard were listed as living with them, as were Henry Morton, age 18, an apprentice blacksmith, and Abram Lansbury, age 23, a blacksmith.2
     His wife died on 7 Dec 1871.19
     John married second Susan H. Voris on 4 Feb 1873 in Jefferson Co., Indiana, with John T. Hutchison offciating.11,12
     John and Susan appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Jackson Twp., Decatur Co., Indiana, enumerated 30 Jun 1880. His children by his previous marriage, James, Anna, Willard and Emma, were listed as living with them, as were two boarders, W. T. Lloyd, a plasterer, and Jefferson Dowty, a carpenter.20
     John and Susan moved to Hamilton, Kansas, a new railroad village, in the spring of 1884. He set up a blacksmith shop there.15 He operated it for many years, until he retired before 1910.21,22,23,24,25
     John and Susan appeared on the 1885 State Census of Janesville Twp., Greenwood Co., Kansas. His children James, Anna, Willard and Emma were listed as living with them, as was O. Reis, a 38-year-old farmer from England.26
     John and Susan appeared on the 1895 State Census of Janesville, Greenwood Co., Kansas. His daughter Anna was listed as living with them.27
     John and Susan appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Janesville, Greenwood Co., Kansas, enumerated 12 Jun 1900, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. His daughter Anna was listed as living with them, as was his brother Robert.28
     John and Susan appeared on the 1905 State Census of Hamilton, Greenwood Co., Kansas, reporting they owned their home. His daughter Anna was listed as living with him.29
     John and Susan appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Janesville Twp., Greenwood Co., Kansas, on Greenwood, enumerated 16 Apr 1910, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. His daughter Anna was listed as living with them.30
     John and Susan appeared on the 1915 State Census of Hamilton, Greenwood Co., Kansas, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. His daughter Anna was listed as living with him, as was her niece, Hagar Ealy, a 24-year-old school teacher.31
     John and his daughter Anna were taken to Emporia, Kansas, 28 Oct 1918 by his daughter Emma, to live there with her and her husband during the winter. Susan had broken a hip some months before and was not able to keep house. She would be living with her niece, Hagar Ealy and her husband.32
     John died on 11 May 1919, at the home of his daughter Emma and her husband, in 721 Neosho St., Emporia, Kansas, at age 84.13,14 He was buried in Janesville Cemetery, Hamilton, Greenwood Co., Kansas.15
