     Joseph Israel was born about 1817 in Ohio.4,5,6
     Joseph married first Mary Jane Watson on 4 Jul 1844 in Switzerland Co., Indiana, with Rev. Silvester Stevenson offciating.1,7
     Joseph and Mary appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana, enumerated 8 Oct 1850. Their children Joseph, Elizabeth and Sarah were listed as living with them.2
     Joseph married second Submit S. Garlinghouse, daughter of John Garlinghouse and Lewanna [surname unknown], on 24 Nov 1852 in Switzerland Co., Indiana, with Thomas Stewart offciating.8,9
     He was a farmer in 1850, and a cooper by 1860.12,13
     Joseph and Submit settled in Switzerland Co. after their marriage. They appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana, enumerated 28 Aug 1860, reporting no real estate but personal estate of $50. Her children by her prior marriage, Marietta and Alice, were listed as living with them, as was her mother.14
     Joseph enlisted in the 2nd Indiana Light Artillery 14 Aug 1861, as a private.15,16 He was mustered out 1 Sep 1864.17
     Joseph and Submit have not been found in the 1870 census. It is not know whether she was still living then.
     His second wife died before 1880.18,19
     Joseph appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Hoggins School House, Gallatin Co., Kentucky, in the household of his daughter Elizabeth and her husband, Manuel Forwood.20
     He was a laborer by 1880.21
     Joseph applied for an invalid pension based on his Civil War service on 29 Nov 1887, which was subsequently approved.22
     Joseph died on 20 May 1890.10 He was buried in Slawson Cemetery, Bennington, Switzerland Co., Indiana.11
