Gaudenchey Dulucky Sanders was born on 27 Mar 1849 in Clay Co., Indiana.5,6,7 His first name is found with various spellings, most commonly Godentia, which may have been a nickname.1,16,17His parents died when he was about one year old, and he was raised by his grandparents.18
Gaudenchey appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Lewis Twp., Clay Co., Indiana, enumerated 9 Sep 1850, in the household of Elihu and Rebecca Puckett, his maternal grandmother and her second husband.19 He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Lewis Twp., Clay Co., Indiana, enumerated 10 Jul 1860, in the household of his maternal grandmother and her second husband.20

Gaudenchey enrolled in Co. K, 131th Indiana, Infantry 7 Apr 1864, at Indianapolis, Indiana. The regiment was also known as the 13th Indiana Cavalry.21,22,23 The regiment was mustered in 29 Apr 1864 and left the state the next day, proceeding to Nashville, Tennessee, where it was dismounted and given infantry arms and accouterments.24,25 Gaudenchey was captured in May 1864, but escaped three days later "when his captors were reveling on the spoils of a distillery."18
The regiment was ordered to Huntsville, Alabama, 31 May 1864 for garrison duty, being engaged in several skirmishes with bands of cavalry. Company K with five others moved to Nashville and participated, dismounted, in the battle of Nashville. The entire regiment then received new mounts and arms and proceeded down the river, stopping at Vicksburg then on to Mobile. After the fall of Mobile it moved on the raid through Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi, reaching Columbus 22 May, then proceeded to Macon. It returned to Columbus 6 Jun, and remained there until November, when it was ordered to Vicksburg to be mustered out.24,25 Gaudenchey was mustered out 18 Nov 1865 at Vicksburg, Mississippi, with the regiment.26
Gaudenchey enlisted in Co. E, 18th United States Infantry 1 Dec 1865, at Indianapolis, listing his occupation as soldier.27 The regiment had arrived at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, 24 Nov 1865, and the companies had marched to their designated posts in Kansas and Colorado Territory. When and where Gaudenchey joined his company is unknown. Part of the regiment was sent to Utah Territory, but where Co. E was deployed is unknown. At this time, all companies were performing garrison duties, furnishing escorts for the U.S. mail, for hay and wood trains, and also scouting against hostile Indians.28 Gaudenchey was reported as deserted 3 May 1866.27

Later in 1866 he drove wagon teams through Colorado and Montana Territories, and for the next four years "whacked" bull teams across the plains.18 He became a farmer after he returned from the west.29,30,31,32,33
Gaudenchey married first Mariah M. Terhune, daughter of James B. Terhune and Martha M. Cobb, on 10 Aug 1876 in Jasper Co., Illinois.8,9,10
Gaudenchey and Mariah moved to Clay Co., Indiana, by 1880. They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Lewis Twp., Clay Co., Indiana, enumerated 15 Jun 1880. Their daughter Martha was listed as living with them.34
Gaudenchey applied for an invalid pension based on his Civil War service on 31 Jan 1890, but it was not approved for some years.35
His wife died on 13 Oct 1891.36

Gaudenchey married second Rose L. McDaniel, daughter of Alvin McDaniel and Miss Allen, on 14 Jan 1892 in Palestine, Crawford Co., Illinois, with James T. Ather, justtice of the peace, officiating.11,12
Gaudenchey and Rose appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Orchard Twp., Wayne Co., Illinois, enumerated 11 Jun 1900, reporting they owned their farm, free of mortgage. His daughters by his prior marriage, Olga and Ruth, were listed as living with them.17
His pension was finally approved 16 Feb 1906, effective 24 Jan 1906, for $17 per month. It was increased to $30 per month effective in 1912, to $38 in 1921, $50 effective back to 1920, and to $72 effective 8 Oct 1921.37
Gaudenchey and Rose appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Orchard Twp., Wayne Co., Illinois, enumerated 21 Apr 1910, reporting they owned their farm, which was mortgaged.38
Gaudenchey and Rose appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Orchard Twp., Wayne Co., Illinois, enumerated 21 Jun 1920, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. Clarence Brewer, age 14, a nephew, was also listed as living with them.39
Gaudenchey died on 9 Sep 1929 in Centralia, Marion Co., Ill., at age 80.13,14 He was buried on 11 Sep 1929 in Pleasant Hill, Wayne Co., Illinois.15
