Sophia Stedman was born on 23 Mar 1846 in Rising Sun, Indiana.6,7,8Her mother died on 2 Nov 1847, when Sophia was 1 year old.15
She appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Aurora, Dearborn Co., Indiana, in the household of her father, Nathan R. Stedman, and stepmother, Louisa Cadwell.16
Neither Sophia, who would have been 14, nor her two then teen-age sisters, have been found in the 1860 census. They were not with their father and stepmother, who were living in Natchez, Adams Co., Mississippi, and have not been found elsewhere.17
Sophia married John Willard Christy, son of Churchill G. Christy and Maria Cobb, on 23 Apr 1866 in Dearborn Co., Indiana, with Alex G. Wilson offciating.9,10,11
Sophia and John appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Delhi Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, enumerated 27 Jun 1870, reporting real estate valued at $2,000 and personal estate of $3,000.18
Sophia and John appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Home City, Hamilton Co., Ohio, enumerated 29 Jun 1880. Their children Flora, Elmer, Abbie and Edna were listed as living with them.19
Sophia and John appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Home City, Hamilton Co., Ohio, enumerated 9 Jun 1900, reporting they rented their home. Their children Elmer, Abbie, Edna, Nathan, Fannie and Winnifred were listed as living with them.20
Sophia and John appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Norwood, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at 3932 Regent Ave., enumerated 18 Apr 1910, reporting they rented their home. Their children Nathan, Fannie and Winnifred were listed as living with them.21 However it appears he was not actually living with the family, as he also appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Jeffreson Twp., Montgomery Co., Ohio, at the National Military Home, enumerated 28 May 1910, listed as an inmate.22
Her husband died on 7 Sep 1916 in National Military Home, Jefferson Twp., Montgomery Co., Ohio.23,24
Sophia applied for a widow's pension based on her late husband's Civil War service on 13 Oct 1916, which was subsequently approved.25
Sophia died on 30 Mar 1918, at her home, 3106 Troy Ave., Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at age 72.12 She was buried on 2 Apr 1918 in River View Cemetery, Aurora, Dearborn Co., Indiana.13,14
