Joachim Fernandez

Narrative:

     Joachim Fernandez was born on 13 Dec 1813 in Island of Majorica.^4,5,6
     His mother was a French woman and his father an officer in the Spanish army. After his father's death his mother married Joseph Carnet, a Frenchman. The family immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Huntington Co., Indiana, in 1837 or 1838.³
     Joachim married Anne Marie Engel Kuhlmann, daughter of Ernst Heinrich Kuhlmann and Anne Marie Elisabeth Fenncker, on 14 Nov 1846 in Huntington Co., Indiana, with John Attman, justice of the peace, officiating.^7,8,9
     Joachim and Anne appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Huntington, Huntington Co., Indiana, enumerated 3 Sep 1850, in the household of Benjamin Orton, a merchant, and his family. Joachim reported owning real estate valued at $1,320. Her sister Elizabeth was also listed in the household.¹¹
     He was in the grocery business on East Market St., Huntington, for may years.^12,13,14,15
     Joachim and Anne appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Huntington, Huntington Co., Indiana, enumerated 4 Jun 1860, reporting real estate valued at $5,300 and personal estate of $1,000.¹⁶
     Joachim and Anne appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Huntington, Huntington Co., Indiana, enumerated 21 Jun 1870, reporting real estate valued at $3,000 and personal estate of $8,000. Edward McCarty, age 3, was also listed as living with them. His parents and their seven older children were apparently living close by as they were listed as the second preceding household.¹⁷
     When the city of Huntington was formed in Sep 1873, Joachim was elected it's first treasurer, an office in which he served for many years.^18,19
     Joachim and Anne appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Huntington, Huntington Co., Indiana, on East Market St., enumerated 4 Jun 1880.²⁰
     Joachim and Anne moved to a farm just north of town after he sold his store.²¹
     Joachim left a will dated 1 Jul 1892 stating he was of Huntington Co., Indiana, in which he stated that all his just debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon as could reasonably be done. He gave to his wife all his personal property, and the south half of the farm where they lived. She was to pay half his debts and funeral expenses. He gave the north half of the farm to the Diocese of Wayne Indiana, to be sold. The proceeds were to be used to pay the other half of his debts and funeral expenses, send $50 to the pastor of the Catholic Church in Huntington, and the rest to Catholic Orphan Asylum at Ft. Wayne, Indiana. He appointed John Roche as his executor.²²
     Joachim died on 10 Jul 1892, at his home a mile north of Huntington, Huntington Co., Indiana, at age 78.¹⁰
     His will was probated on 5 Aug 1892 in Huntington Co. Circuit Court.²²
