Narrative:

Etta C. Britton was born on 30 Sep 1884 in Virginia.5,6,7,8
Her parents divorced before 1890, when she would have been six years old.15
Her mother died before 1898, when Etta was about 14 years old.16,17
Etta appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of James E. Fallen and Mary C. Britton, her maternal grandfather and his second wife, who was also a sister of Etta's father.18
When Etta was living with her maternal grandparents and then her mother's brother and his wife she was listed in the census with their surname, Fallen. No other evidence that she actually used that surname has been found, but the fact that it appears in two different censuses suggests she did.2,19
Etta appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of Walter F. Fallen and Malissa E. Canada, her mother's brother and his wife.20 Etta also appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of her mother and step-father, Charles Hundley Watts, listed here with his surname.21
After Etta started living with her mother and step-father she used his surname, Watts, which was apparently the surname she was using when she married. Whether he actually adopted her is unknown, but it seems unlikely since she was an adult by that time. But clearly she was considered part of his family, as evidenced by her tombstone in the family plot engraved "Daughter."22,23,24
Etta as not been found in the 1920 census.
She appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Roanoke, Charlotte Co., Virginia, in the household of her mother and step-father.25
Etta married Marvin Ream Harris, son of John C. Harris and Betty M. Finch, before 1940.9,10,11
Etta and Marvin appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Thomasville, Davidson Co., North Carolina, at 109 Montlieu St., enumerated 9 Apr 1940, reporting they rented their home, for $8 per month, and that they had lived in rural Charlotte Co., Virginia in 1935.26
Her husband died on 30 May 1960 in Thomasville, Davidson Co., North Carolina.27,28
Etta died on 24 Sep 1963 in South Boston, Halifax Co., Virginia, at age 78.12,13 She was buried in Hermon Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Randolph, Charlotte Co., Virginia.4,14
