     Melcajas A. Britton was born on 16 Mar 1849 in Halifax Co., Virginia.7,8,9
     He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of his parents, Isham H. Britton and Mary W. Toot.16,17
     His father died about 1852, when Melcajas was about 3 years old.18,19
     He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of his mother, Mary W. Toot, reporting personal estate of $2,000, and ownership of two slaves employed by her mother.20,21
     Melcajas appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 13 Sep 1870. His mother and two youngest sisters were apparently living close by as they were listed as the preceeding household.22 He was a farmer.23,24,25
     Melcajas married first Elizabeth Edward Fallen, daughter of James E. Fallen and Elizabeth J. Tharp, on 13 Mar 1878 in Halifax Co., Virginia. She was the younger sister of the man his niece, Henrietta Carrington Britton, had married the year before.10,11
     Melcajas and Elizabeth appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 5 Jun 1880.26
     Melcajas and Elizabeth were divorced before 1890.12
     Melcajas married second Sallie Henry Blackstock, daughter of David Allen Blackstock and Sallie Ann Conner, on 10 Dec 1890 in Halifax Co., Virginia.13,14
     Melcajas and Sallie appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 27 Jun 1900, reporting they owned their home. Two boarders were also listed in the household, Fannie Covington, age 25, and Millie C. Blackstock, age 18, apparently a relative of hers.27
     Melcajas and Sallie appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 20 Apr 1910, reporting they were renting their farm.28
     Melcajas died on 3 Jun 1911 at age 62.9 He was buried in Hunting Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Nathalie, Halifax Co., Virginia.15
