Narrative:

     Joseph Dean Snowdall was born on 6 Dec 1908 in Ford, Kansas.7,8,9
     He moved to Missouri with his parents in 1910. He appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of West Elm, Putnam Co., Missouri, in the household of his parents, Joseph Alvy Snowdall and Ethel Maud Gordon.4
     He moved to Iowa about 1912 with his parents.16,17 He appeared on the 1915 State Census of Riverside Twp., Fremont Co., Iowa, in the household of his parents.18,19,20,21,22 He appeared on the 1925 State Census of Tarkio, Page Co., Iowa, in the household of his parents.5
     Joseph appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Dallas Twp., Taylor Co., Iowa, enumerated 15 Apr 1930, boarding with Byard L. Hook and his wife, apparently as a hired hand on their farm.23
     He generally used his middle name, Dean, after 1930, including in some official records, such as his Social Security account. However his military records were in his full name.24,25,26
     Joseph registered for the draft for World War II on 16 Feb 1940, while living at Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, reporting he was employed by Claude Anderson, in Shenandoah.1
     Dean appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Fisher Twp., Fremont Co., Iowa, enumerated in Apr 1940, in the household of Claude Anderson and his family, listed as a hired man. He reported he had lived in rural Page Co. Iowa in 1935.27
     He was in the U.S. Navy in World War II, entering the service 11 Sep 1941 in Omaha, Nebraska. He served at a number of stations including the USNTC Great Lakes and the Navy Pier in Chicago before being assigned to the USS SC-981, a submarine chaser.28,29 He joined the crew of that ship the day it was commissioned, 1 Oct 1942, in Philadelphia. He served on that ship throughout the war, until he was transferred to Treasure Island, San Francisco on 1 May 1945.30,31
     Joseph was discharged 1 Nov 1945, at Minneapolis, Minnesota.32
     Joseph married Rachel Wilma Morris, daughter of Edgar Lafeyette Morris and Lola L. Knisley, on 22 Jan 1946 in Troy, Kansas.10,11
     On 4 May 1949 Dean filed a claim with Iowa's World War II Service Compensation Board based on his military service. He reported he was then living at Sterling, Bingham Co., Idaho, and had been living in Shenandoah, Iowa, at the time he entered the service. His claim was approved and he received $500.33
     He was a farm laborer in 1940 and a farmer in his own right by 1950. He reported in the 1950 census he had worked 70 hours the prior week.34,35,36
     Joseph and Rachel appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Lincoln, Page Co., Iowa, enumerated 18 Apr 1950, reporting they lived on a farm of over three acres. Their daughter Cherrie was listed as living with them.25
     Joseph died on 25 Mar 1981 in Omaha, Nebraska, at age 72.12,13,14 He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa.15
