     John Jarrand West was born on 13 Jan 1886 in Clarksville, Tennessee.7,8,9
     His father died on 19 Aug 1892, when John was 6 years old.19,20
     He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Clarksville, Montgomery Co., Tennessee, in the household of his mother, Georgia Beaumont, and stepfather, Bruce L. Rice.21
     He moved to New York City with his mother and stepfather in 1901.22,23
     John appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Manhattan, New York Co., New York, in a hotel managed by Dewitt C. Jones, with over 40 guests and a staff of 16. His mother and stepfather were also living there, though it is not clear they were sharing quarters.24
     He was a salesman in the auto supply business by 1910.25
     John married first Burlington Butts, daughter of William Burlington Butts and Annie F. Tillman, on 6 May 1911 in New York City, New York.10,11
     John and Burlington were divorced before 1918.12,13
     John registered for the draft for World War I on 12 Sep 1918, while living at 118 Montague St., Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, reporting he was employed as Secretary and Treasurer of Manhattan Slide and Film Co., at 110 W. 40 St., New York.3 He reported in the 1920 census that he was secretary and treasurer in the motion picture business.26
     John married Elizabeth Fredonia Gracey, daughter of Julien Frank Gracey and Minnie Irene Thomas, on 18 Sep 1918 in Clarksville, Montgomery Co., Tennessee. They were married in a quiet ceremony with only immediate family at the home of her sister Hope on Greenwood Ave. Rev. Edward Stubblefield, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiated.14,15,16,17
     They departed for New York City, where he was engaged in business, immediately after the ceremoney.27
     John and Elizabeth appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, at 118 Montague, enumerated 6 Jan 1920, reporting they rented their home.28
     John and Elizabeth apparently moved to Tarrytown, a northern suburb of New York, sometime after 1920, but just when is unknown.29
     John and Elizabeth moved to New South Wales, Australia, in mid-1929.30,31
     John's ex-wife sued him in 1929 and won judgment for monies spent in support of their son. She apparently had difficultly collecting, as she advertised in the Clarksville newspaper in Aug 1929 stating he had left Tarrytown, New York, leaving no forwarding address, and seeking information about his whereabouts.32
     John and Elizabeth moved to England, sailing from Sydney to London aboard the Narkunda, arriving 16 May 1930.33,34,35 By 1933 they were living in an apartment in Eyre Court, Finchley Rd., where they continued to live until they returned to New York.36,37
     He reported his occupation as salesman when he moved to England, and later identified himself as a director.38,39
     John and Elizabeth moved back to New York, arriving in New York City 8 Jan 1937, aboard the S.S. Washington, having sailed from Southampton on 30 Dec. They gave as their intended addresss as 41 N. Broadway, Tarrytown. Her sister Irene and her daughter returned with them, indicating they intended to live at the same address.40,41
     John and Elizabeth appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Mount Pleasant, Westchester Co., New York, at 7 Farrington, enumerated 5 Dec 1940, reporting they rented their home, for $80 per month, and that they had lived in London in 1935.42
     John was a sales executive dealing with electrical appliances in 1940, but reported that he was unemployed and looking for work, and had not worked in the prior year.43 He registered for the draft for World War II on 25 Apr 1942, while living at 7 Farrington Ave., North Tarrytown, Westchester Co., New York, reporting he was unemployed.44 He worked for General Electric, but whether before or after this is unknown.45
     John died on 6 Sep 1962 in Tarrytown, New York, at age 76.18
