John married Jane Cunningham, daughter of Thomas Cunningham and Mary Cameline, on 14 Jan 1851 in Tazewell Co., Illinois.9,10,11
John and Jane appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Groveland Twp., Tazewell Co., Illinois, enumerated 29 Jul 1870, reporting real estate valued at $16,000 and personal estate of $3,000. Their children Helen, Emeline, John, Mary, George and Louis were listed as living with them, as were farm laborers Henry Billings, age 23, and Samuel Ramsey, age 21.21

He was a farmer.20,21,24 He began farming on his own at age 21, when he rented land from his father and some neighbors. On 16 Jan 1851 he settled on his own property, 80 acres given him by his father. Subsequent purchases increased the total to 160 acres of timber and 320 acres of tillable land, some of which he later gave to his sons. He mainly raised stock.4
The 1870 census of Groveland Twp. provides a snapshot of his farm. On it he reported he held 200 acres of improved land and 90 acres of woodland, which he valued at $10,400, plus $400 worth of implements. He paid $400 in wages, including board, for hired help over the prior year. He had 6 horses and 6 milch cows, 30 other cattle, and 25 swine, valued in total at $1,400. An 1894 publication described his home of 40 years as "A finely improved farm of three hundred and twenty acres pleasantly situated in Groveland Township Tazewell County." It continues "The Mooberry farm is one of the most valuable in Groveland Township, being improved with good buildings and all the appurtenances required by the progressive and industrious agriculturist. Mr. Mooberry keeps himself posted upon modern methods of agriculture and avails himself of the approved machinery in the cultivation of his land."26
