Hedwig L. Barthel was born about 1875 in Königreich Sachsen.4,5,6 She was known to family as Hattie.10Hedwig L. Barthel was living in Trachnitz, Königreich Sachsen, when she emigrated.11 She arrived in New York on 22 Mar 1901, on the Pennsylvania, having departed Humburg 10 Mar 1901, traveling in steerage class. She was traveling with Georg Albert Gapsch, her future husband.12,13,14
Hedwig married Georg Albert Gapsch, son of August Hermann Gapsch and Johanne Therese Huegel, about 1902.7,8,9 She was apparently naturalized in 1906 although there is conflicting evidence suggesting that she was not.15,16,17
Hedwig and Georg were farmers, apparently jointly operating their farm, but retired by 1930.18,19,20,21,22
Hedwig and Georg appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Springfield, Sarpy Co., Nebraska, enumerated 27 Apr 1910, reporting that they owned their farm, which was mortgaged.23
They appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Springfield, Sarpy Co., Nebraska, enumerated 29 Jan 1920, reporting that they owned their farm, which was mortgaged.24
Hedwig and Georg appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Springfield, Sarpy Co., Nebraska, enumerated 17 Apr 1930, reporting that they rented their home, for $15 per month, and did not own a radio.25
