Narrative:
James P. Caruthers was born on 21 Apr 1862, in Mississippi probably, at either his paternal grandmother's plantation in Monroe Co., or his maternal grandfather's plantation in Coahoma Co. But records are in conflict and he may have been born in Memphis before his parents moved to Mississippi at the beginning of the Civil War.7,8,9He moved to Memphis, Tennessee, with his parents after the War.14,15,16 He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Shelby Co., Tennessee

He moved to Chicago with his parents in Sep 1877.18,19,20 He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois,

James married Frances Roney, daughter of Samuel Roney and Mary Muldoon, about 1883.10,11,12
James and Frances lived with his parents, at 739 Sedgewick St., Chicago

James and Frances moved with their son John out of his parent's home, to 217 Schiller St.

James was a salesman by 1887. By 1888 he was in the hardware business, under the firm name J. P. Caruthers & Co., located at 136 Kinzie St.

James's business failed in early 1894. At a meeting held 19 Apr 1894 to examine his affairs, his sister's husband, Edgar W. Terhune appeared, representing their mother. It was claimed that James had borrowed $75,000 from her. Questions about what had become of the $75,000 became contentious, and James accused Edgar and his wife of living in style at the Lexington Hotel at the mother's expense. "A rough and tumble fight" ensued, which included James throwing a cuspidor at Edgar's head, the involvement of others in the room, and blood appearing on the faces of several participants.25
James later worked as a hardware salesman.26,27
James and Frances appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, at 1723 Belmont Ave.

James and Frances appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, at 4352 Lake Ave.

James died on 21 Jun 1916 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois
