Narrative:
Joshua Atkinson was born about 1820.4,5He was probably one of the two males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Thomas Walton Atkinson, in the 1820 Federal Census of Montgomery Co., Tennessee.9 He was probably the male under age 5 to 10 listed in the household of his father in the 1830 Federal Census of Montgomery Co., Tennessee.10
Joshua married Elizabeth A. Watkins on 5 Nov 1838 in Todd Co., Kentucky, with J. S. Saloman, justice of the peace, officiating, consent having been granted because of her age.6
Joshua appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Montgomery Co., Tennessee, with a household consisting of one male under age 5 (son Quintus) and one age 20 to 30 (himself), and one female age 20 to 30 (his second wife, Elizabeth A. Watkins.)11
He was engaged in "manufactures and trades" according to the 1840 census.12
Joshua died in 1846.7,8
Joshua died intestate (without leaving a will) and letters of administration for his estate were issued on 6 Jul 1846 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee, to his half-brother Quintus. Quintus posted a bond of $5,000, with their father and George C. Boyd as surities.13
An inventory of his estate was filed in the Apr 1848 term, listing a note for $50, marked as "doubtful," cash on hand of $1,775, and $682 due from his father's firm, T. W. Atkinson & Co. It also reported sale of 90 bags and 90 sacks of salt and household goods, totaling $312 in Aug 1846, and three half pipes of brandy that had been consigned to a dealer, which were not valued.14
The first settlement of the estate was filed on 25 Jan 1848. The administrator reported receiving $312 from the sale of goods, and the inventory of $2,506. After expenses of $101, including writing off the doubtful note, and his fee of $141, there was a balance in the estate of $2,575. This did not including the value of the brandy.15
The final settlement of the estate was filed on 3 Mar 1851. It reported interest of $476, other income of $192, recovery of the doubtful note of $50, and $6 of expenses, leaving a balance in the estate of $3,288.16
