Nels Magni Carlson was born on 3 Mar 1871 in Öya Parish, Werjö Diocese, Kronoberg, Sweden.7,8,9Nels appeared on the 1872-1877 Husförhör (household examination) of the village of Buskahult, in Öya Parish, Kronoberg county, Sweden. in the household of his parents Carl Petersson and Christina Nilsdotter.5
His mother died on 14 Apr 1883, when Nels was 12 years old.19
Nels appeared on the 1886-1890 Husförhör (household examination) of the Järnvägsstation area, in Växjö Parish, Kronoberg county, Sweden. in the household of his father and stepmother, Johanna Johnnsdotter.20
Nels departed Göteborg, Sweden, 1 Jul 1890, aboard the steamboat Orlando21,22, sailing to Hull, England, He said his destination was Madrid, Iowa.3 He embarked from Liverpool, England, aboard the S.S. Arizona, traveling in steerage class. He arrived in New York City 14 Jul 1890, listing his occupation as farm laborer.23,24,25 He went to Iowa, to live with an uncle, where he stayed about five years.26
In the United States he was generally know as Nelson Carlson, or by his initials, though official records sometimes used is birth name.27,28,29 He was naturalized in 1895.24,25,30

He was one of the organizers of a business in Seymour, established to manufacture a new type of bicycle. In 1898 he was advertising as the proprietor of the Seymour Bicycle Factory, offering to make repairs and make new bicycles to order. He claimed "10 years practical experience in the manufacture of bicycles."33,32,34
Nels married Alice Mary Cobb, daughter of Elkanah Cobb and Lucy Barnaby, on 20 Oct 1898 in Seymour, Jackson Co., Indiana, with Rev. J. W. Clevinger officiating.10,11,12
The Seymour Bicycle Factory proved to be a short-lived enterprise, and Nels was seeking other opportunities. By the spring of 1899 he was advertising in his own name "First-Class Bicycle Repairing" and offering a full line of tires and sundries, and to make "new wheels" (that is, bicycles) to order. In May he was advertising "lawn movers ground and repaired" at his machine shop. By October he was advertising that he could nickel plate stoves, or do gold or silver plating.35,36,37
In late Oct 1899 the Stanfield-Carlson Hardware Company opened it store at 106 West Second St. Thomas J. Stanfield, husband of Nels's wife's half-sister, was senior partner in that venture. He had previously been in the same business in the city.38,39

In 1905 Edwin S. Stanfield, brother of Thomas, bought an interest in the hardware business, and the firm erected a saw mill in the northwest part of town. In Mar 1913 Edwin sold his interest in the hardware company to Nels, who continued to operate it under the name of Carlson Hardware. He and Edwin Stanfield continued to operate the saw mill for a time.41,42,43,44,45
Nels and Alice appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Seymour, Jackson Co., Indiana, at 404 North Walnut St., enumerated 15 Jan 1920, reporting that the couple owned their home. Listed as living with them was a physician, James K. Ritter, age 55 and a widower, identified as a boarder.46
Nels and Alice appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Seymour, Jackson Co., Indiana, at 504 North Walnut St., enumerated 10 Apr 1930, reporting that the couple owned a home valued at $7500, and owned a radio.47
Nels and Alice appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Seymour, Jackson Co., Indiana, at 504 North Walnut St., enumerated 5 Apr 1940, reporting they owned a home valued at $6,000, and that they had lived in the same house in 1935.48
Nels served on the Schneck Memorial Hospital board, and was the last surviving original member. He was president of the Riverview Cemetery Association at his death.49
Nels died on 24 Feb 1944, at his home, 504 North Walnut St., Seymour, Jackson Co., Indiana, at age 72.13,14,15 He was buried on 28 Feb 1944 in Riverview Cemetery, Seymour, Jackson Co., Indiana.16,17,18
