Elkanah C. Terhune was born on 17 May 1846 in Indiana.7,8,9
He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Marion Twp., Decatur Co., Indiana, in the household of his parents, James B. Terhune and Martha M. Cobb.18
He moved to Illinois with his parents about 1858.19 He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of St. Marie, Jasper Co., Illinois, in the household of his parents.20 Elkanah was probably one of the two males age 10 to 20 listed in the household of his father on the 1865 State Census of Willow Hill, Jasper Co., Illinois.21
Elkanah enlisted 14 Mar 1865 as a private in Company K, 32nd Infantry Regiment, Illinois.22,23 The regiment had been organized 31 Dec 1861. On 6 Jun 1865 it moved by rail to Parkersburg, Virginia, thence by boat to Louisville, Kentucky. On 20 Jun, the Brigade, including the 32nd Regiment, was transferred to the Department of the Missouri and moved by boat to St. Louis. Here it was dispatched to the far west via Fort Leavenworth. It marched on the 22nd, and arrived 13 Aug at Fort Kearney, Nebraska, where orders for muster out were received. The unit reached Fort Leavenworth 2 Sep, and mustered out 16 Sep, and was paid off at Camp Butler.24 Elkanah was mustered out 16 Sep 1865 in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, when the unit was disbanded.22
Elkanah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Willow Hill, Jasper Co., Illinois, in the household of his parents.25
He was working on a farm, presumably his father's farm, in 1870.26
Elkanah married Marthena Jane Perry, daughter of James Perry and Marthena Ryon, on 28 Sep 1871 in Jasper Co., Illinois.10,11,12
Elkanah and his brother Phillip bought John Watt's stock of goods, which they sold later to their younger brother Joshua.27
Elkanah and Marthena moved to Indiana about 1877. They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Seymour, Jackson Co., Indiana, on West Tipton St., enumerated 7 Jun 1880. Their children Willard and Sarah were listed as living with them, as was her mother, Marthena Ryon, and her sister, Josephene T. Perry.28
Elkanah was listed as a laborer in 1880. By 1900 he had become a carpenter.29,30,31
He applied for an invalid pension based on his Civil War service on 26 Sep 1883, but his application was rejected.32
Elkanah and Marthena returned to Indiana by 1900. They appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Newton, Jasper Co., Illinois, on Jourdau St., enumerated 6 Jun 1900, reporting that the couple owned their home, free of mortgage.33
Elkanah applied again for an invalid pension based on his Civil War service on 20 May 1908, and this application was approved 10 Jun 1908, effective on the application date, for $12 per month. It was increased to $15.50 effective 3 Jun 1912, $19 in 1916, $22 in 1921, then $32 effective back to 10 Jun 1918, $50 effective 1 May 1920, and $72 effective 8 Sep 1920. Amounts unpaid at his death were paid to his widow.34,35

They appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Urbana, Champaign Co., Illinois, at 1410 Eads, enumerated 21 Apr 1910, reporting they rented their home. Their children Willard and Sarah were listed as living with them. Sarah was listed in their household as single, obviously in error, as she also appeared next door, at 1408 Eads, with her husband, Walter Burke, and their children Vivian, Alice, Charles, and Marvin.36
