Narrative:
John Smith Toot was born on 27 Nov 1841 in Halifax Co., Virginia.7,8,9He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of his parents, Melcajah Rhum Toot and Mariah Louis Smith.14,15
John enrolled 20 May 1861, at Black Walnut, Halifax Co., Virginia, for one year, as a private in Capt. William Easley's Company of Cavalry, also known as the Black Walnut Dragoons. He mustered into service 28 May in Richmond, 150 miles away. He was credited with providing a horse valued at $100 and equipment valued at $25.16 The company was transferred to service of the Confederate States 1 Jul 1861, and was known a Company H, 2nd Regiment Virginia Cavalry. In Oct it became Company H, and later Company C, of the 3rd Virginia Cavalry.16
John was absent on sick furlough in Oct 1861 and Jan 1862. He re-enlisted at the expiration of his one-year obligation. He is recorded as a 3rd corporal in Aug 1863, when he was also recorded as absent without leave. In the remaining surviving company muster rolls he was recorded as present, as a private.17
John was with the regiment, part of the Army of Northern Virginia, when it was surrendered by Gen. Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, 9 Apr 1865.18
John appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Huco Twp., Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 6 Aug 1870, reporting personal estate of $600.19
John married Sallie R. Owen, daughter of Robert Easley Owen and Mary Ann Frances Howerton, on 14 Oct 1874 in Halifax Co., Virginia, with Jonathan H. Davis officiating.10,11
John and Sallie appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Black Walnut Twp., Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 17 Jun 1880, as were three Black domestic servants. Their daughter Mary was listed as living with them.20
He was a farmer in 1870, and a dry goods merchant by the time of his marriage, but returned to farming by 1900.21,22,23,24,25
His wife died on 15 Jan 1896 in Halifax Co., Virginia.26,27,28
John appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Black Walnut District, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 8 Jun 1900. His daughter Mary was listed as living with him, as was his sister Sallie, and her daughter, Mary.29
John appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Black Walnut, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 26 Apr 1910, reporting he owned his farm, free of mortgage. His sister Sallie was listed as living with him.30
John died on 21 Jan 1920 in Black Walnut District, Halifax Co., Virginia, at age 78.3,9 He was buried on 22 Jan 1920 in Mayo Plantation Cemetery, Mayo, Halifax Co., Virginia.12,13
