     Sallie King Toot was born on 27 Sep 1837 in Halifax Co., Virginia.7,8,9
     She was probably the female under age 5 listed in the household of her father, Melcajah Rhum Toot, in the 1840 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia.17 She appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of her parents, Melcajah Rhum Toot and Mariah Louis Smith.18,19
     Sallie married William T. Ballow Jr., son of William Thomas Ballow Jr. and Susanna Hatcher Bransford, on 25 Mar 1856 in Halifax Co., Virginia, with Rev. John Grammes officiating.10,11,12

     Sallie and William appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Halifax Courthouse, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 21 Jun 1860, as is Drury B. Wood, age 20, an overseer. Their son William was listed as living with them.20
     Sallie and William appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Halifax Courthouse, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 23 Jun 1870, reporting $100 in personal estate. Their children William, Maria, Sallie and Susan were listed as living with them, as well as her mother and her sister Maria.21
     Her husband died on 23 Apr 1877 in Houston, Virginia.14,22,23
     Sallie appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Banister District, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 9 Jun 1880. Her children Maria, Sallie, Susan and Mary were listed as living with her.24
     She appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Black Walnut District, Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of her brother John, with her daughter, Mary.25
     Sallie appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Black Walnut, Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of her brother John.26
     Sallie filed for a widow's penson based on her late husband's Civil War service on 20 Jul 1915, stating she was living with her daughter Maria near Houston, Virginia, which later re-named Halifax. She stated that she had no income, and owned no real or personal property, which was confirmed by the county Commissioner of Revenue. She provided additional information 17 Aug in response to a request from the pension clerk. The pension was approved and she was issued a $30 payment 1 Sep 1915.27
     Sallie died on 5 Jan 1917 in Banister District, Halifax Co., Virginia, at age 79.13,14 She was buried on 7 Jan 1917 in St. John's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Halifax, Virginia.15,16
