Narrative:

Robert Emmett Mims was born on 12 Apr 1874 in Douglasville, Cass Co., Texas.8,9,10 He was generally known to friends and family as Emmett.3,14,15
He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Cass Co., Texas, in the household of his parents, Linah C. Mims and Susan Elizabeth Howe.4
He moved with his parents to Moore Co., in the northwest corner of the Texas Panhandle, in May 1892.16,17 Robert appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Hartley Co., Texas, listed as a laborer (cowboy), along with six other ranch hands, on ranch on which Robert P. Church was foreman.18 It was apparently fairly close to the ranch where his younger brother Linah was working, as the workers there were listed as the sixth preceding "household."19
He was taught leather work by his father. After moving to the Panhandle he worked on a number of ranches, making boots and saddles along with other ranch work.20,21
Robert married Lillie Davis Bouldin, daughter of John T. Bouldin and Letitia Meade, and sister of the woman his younger brother Otho had married six years before, on 25 Jun 1902 in Channing Methodist Church, Channing, Texas. They were the first couple married in the church.11,12,13
Robert and Lillie appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Hartley Co., Texas, enumerated 30 Apr 1910, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their children Robert and Otho were listed as living with them.22
By 1910 he had opened a grocery store. He was also involved with the Channing Mercantile Banking Company while he lived there.23,24
By 1918 Robert and Lillie had moved about as far south as they could, to the southern Texas coast. Robert registered for the draft for World War I on 12 Sep 1918, while living in Aransas Pass, San Patricio Co., Texas, reporting he was employed as self-employed operator of a cigar store.25
Robert and Lillie returned to north Texas between 1918 and 1920, settling in Dallam Co. Robert and Lillie appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Dalhart, Dallam Co., Texas, on Denver Ave., enumerated 20 Jan 1920, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their children Robert and Otho were listed as living with them, as were her brother Charles, and Ben Robert Gill, listed as a roomer.14
Robert worked in a shoe shop as a shoemaker after their return north. He continued that occupation most of the rest of his working life.26,27
By 1921 Robert and Lillie had moved to Arizona, where they were living at 925 10th St., Douglas.28 He worked there in the repair shop of William W. Welcome at 510 10th St.29
Robert and Lillie moved to California by 1925 when they were living in Fullerton, where he was an oil worker.30 By the time the 1930 city directory was compiled they had moved to Brea and were living at 313 South Walnut Ave.. Both their sons, and Otho's wife, were listed as living with them.31 He had his own shoe repair shop at 135 S. Pomona Ave.31
Robert and Lillie appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Brea, Orange Co., California, at 313 South Walnut Ave., enumerated 9 Apr 1930, reporting that they owned a home valued at $2,000, but did not own a radio. Both sons had apparently moved by then as they were not listed in the census.32
Robert and Lillie moved to San Pedro by 1934, when they were living at 1147 Marine Ave.33
They apparently returned to the Texas Panhandle very soon after the death of their eldest son, in 1935, this time settling in Amarillo.34 They appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Amarillo, Potter Co., Texas, at 1609A Fillmore St., enumerated 17 Apr 1940, reporting that they were renting their home, for $16 per month, and had lived in Amarillo in 1935.35
Robert died on 1 Aug 1944, at his residence at 1611 Fillmore St., Amarillo, Potter Co., Texas, at age 70.1 He was buried on 2 Aug 1944 in Llano Cemetery, Amarillo.1
