     Johann married Catharine Maria Stöppelwerth.7
     Johann and Catharine arrived in New York, New York, on 12 Aug 1840, with their children Johann, Anna, Johann and Wilhelmine, aboard the brig Grand Turk.12,13 He seems to have gone by the name of John Henry Rodefeld after immigrating to America.14,15,16
     Johann appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, with a household consisting of one male aged 10 to 15 (Johann), one aged 15 to 20 (Johann), one aged 40 to 50 (himself), one female aged 10 to 15 (Wilhelmine), one aged 15 to 20 (Anna) and one aged 40 to 50 (his wife, Catharine.)17
     Johann and Catharine appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Ray Twp., Franklin Co., Indiana, in the household of their daughter Wilhelmine and her husband, Frederick William Belter.18
     Johann appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Batesville, Franklin Co., Indiana, in the household of his son Johann and his wife, Marie Ellen Meyer.19
     He was When he first immigrated he was reported as being employed in "manufactures and trades." But he was reported to be a farmer in the 1860 census.19,20
     Johann apparently died before 1870, as he has not been found with any family members in the 1870 census.8,9,10,11

Since the official effective date of this census was 1 Jun 1840, they should not have been included since we believe they immigrated in Aug 1840. However, the 1840 census was supposed to be completed in nine months, but widespread delays required legislation to extend the interval to 18 months. These delays, and the likelihood that Charles Cist, the enumerator, did not speak German, make it likely that the family was included even though they arrived after the official date.
