She generally used her middle name, Ella, almost exclusively, with her first name appearing only on the most formal documents, such as the record of her second marriage and her death records.1,4,21
She appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Martin, Allegan Co., Michigan, in the household of her parents, William Riley Carpenter and Mary Jane Andrews.5
Ella has not been found in the 1900 census. She is not listed with her father and step-mother, who were listed at Wayland Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, but her marriage record a year later states that she was living in Bradley, an unincorporated village in that township. She does not appear elsewhere in the census of that township either.22
Florence married first Theodore Louis Fenker, son of Johann Hinrich Wilhelm Fennker and Johanna Louise Baum, on 19 Jun 1901 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with Rev. J. B. Pinckard offciating.11,12,13
Ella and Theodore appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, at 237 Elm Place, enumerated 23 Apr 1910, reporting they rented their home. Their son Edgar was listed as living with them, as was Mae Harring, a 28-year old widow who was listed as his sister-in-law.23
Ella and Theodore appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, at 417 Elm St., enumerated 5 Jan 1920. Their son Edgar was listed as living with them.24

Florence married second James William Scott, son of Eugene Scott and Marie Macomber, on 26 Aug 1923 in Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, with Rev. Orlow W. Carr, Methodist Episcopal minister, offciating.15,16
Ella and James have not been found in the 1930 census. Presumably they remained in the Kalamazoo area, but if so no record of them during this period had been found.
Ella and James appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Portage Twp., Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, at 1210 North Side, enumerated 16 Apr 1940, reporting they owned a home valued at $4,000, and that they had lived in the same house in 1935.25
