Narrative:

James William Scott was born on 7 Jul 1875 in Jackson, Michigan.7,8,9
He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, in the household of his parents, Eugene Scott and Marie Macomber.5
His mother died on 17 Feb 1893, when James was 17 years old.17
James has not been found in the 1900 census. He was not listed with his father and step-mother, who were in Kalamazoo. His future wife was with her parents in Minneapolis, Minnesota, so he may have been in that area, but if so has not been found.18,19
James married first Margaret Marie Monohan, daughter of Michail Monohan and Sarah McDonald, about 1903, but just when, and where, are not known. No record of their marriage has been found, other than the 1910 census that shows they had been married 7 years.
Marriage indexes for the time period for Minnesota and Wisconsin are available online, but they do not appear on either.10,11,12
James and Margaret appeared on the 1905 State Census of Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac Co., Wisconsin, reporting they were renting their home.2
James and Margaret appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, at 3104 North New Jersey, enumerated 18 Apr 1910, reporting they rented their home.20
He was a traveling salesman selling wholesale paint and varnish.21,22,23 He registered for the draft for World War I on 12 Sep 1918, while living at 609 Summer, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, reporting he was employed as a traveling salesman for Chicago Varnish Co. of Chicago.3
James and Margaret appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, at 609 Summer St., enumerated 7 Jan 1920, reporting they rented their home. Also listed in the household were Flora Baumann, age 75, listed as his aunt, and Flora Baumann, age 27, listed as his sister.24
His wife died on 19 Jun 1921 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.25
James married second Florence Ella Carpenter, daughter of William Riley Carpenter and Mary Jane Andrews, on 26 Aug 1923 in Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, with Rev. Orlow W. Carr, Methodist Episcopal minister, offciating.13,14
James and Ella have not been found in the 1930 census. Presumably they remained in the Kalamazoo area, but if so no record of them during this period had been found.
James and Ella appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Portage Twp., Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, at 1210 North Side, enumerated 16 Apr 1940, reporting they owned a home valued at $4,000, and that they had lived in the same house in 1935.26
He was the proprietor of a retail cigar store by 1940, reporting that year he had worked 48 hours the last week of March, and 52 weeks the prior year.27
His second wife died on 14 Mar 1958 in Vicksburg, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.28,29
