Narrative:
William Porteous Stagge was born on 18 Jul 1891 in Elmwood Place, Hamilton Co., Ohio.8,9,10He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Columbia Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, in the household of his parents, Robert Frederick Stagge and Elizabeth Caroline Wieman.4 He appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Columbia Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, in the household of his parents.5
He was a farm laborer on the home farm in 1910, then became a farmer on his own.17,18,19
William married Nancy Deborah Mixer, daughter of John Hubbard Mixer and Anna Brogan, on 31 Oct 1912 in Hamilton Co., Ohio, with Rev. Harry McMinn, minister of the Presbyterian Church, officiating.11,12,13
William registered for the draft for World War I on 5 Jun 1917, while living at Madisonville, Hamilton Co., Ohio, reporting he was a self employed farmer. He claimed exemption from draft because of supporting his wife and child.20
William and Nancy appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Columbia Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, at Graves Rd., enumerated 26 Jan 1920. Their son Howard was listed as living with them.2
William and Nancy appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Symmes Twp, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at CCC Highway, enumerated 24 Apr 1930, reporting that the family owned a home worth $4,000 and owned a radio. Their children Howard and Mary were listed as living with them.21
He was a mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office by 1930, reporting in 1940 he had worked 40 hours the last week of March, and 52 weeks the prior year, earning $1,500.22,23
William and Nancy appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Symmes Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, enumerated 16 Apr 1940, reporting they owned a home valued at $4,000, and that they had lived in the same house in 1935. Their children Howard and Mary were listed as living with them.24
William moved to rural Warren Co., some 20 miles from outside Cincinnati, by 1942. William registered for the draft for World War II on 26 Apr 1942, while living at Fosters, Warren Co., Ohio, reporting he was employed by U.S. Government.25
Their son Howard was also living in Warren Co. by then, but whether they were living together is unclear. It is also not clear whether Nancy moved there with them, but the fact that William listed Mrs. Helen Maag as the "person who will always know your address" on his draft registration in 1942, and not his wife as was more common, suggests not. Helen's husband was postmaster there, and since William had been a postman, that may have been their connection.26,27
William and Nancy were clearly separated by 1950.28 Nancy appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Norwood, Hamilton Co., Ohio, in the household of their daughter Mary and her husband, Charles T. Taylor.29 William appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Deerfield, Warren Co., Ohio, on Davis Rd., enumerated 4 May 1950, reporting he lived in a home that was not on a farm.30
William and Nancy were living in Foster, Ohio, at the time of his death. No record of where she was living then as been found, but they were apparently reconciled as they were buried next to each other in her father's lot.31
William died on 29 Feb 1960 in Foster, Warren Co., Ohio, at age 68, at his residence.14,15 He was buried on 2 Mar 1960 in Cemetery of Spring Grove, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, in the lot owned by his father-in-law.16
Children:
Children with Nancy Deborah Mixer
The only record found of Donald is his name listed in information provided by a family member, with no source shown. The 1950 census shows Nancy had only two children born alive. Either Donald was stillborn, the census record is in error and he died very young, or his listing in the family source is simply wrong.34,35
