     George William Crane was born in Sep 1840 in Frederick Co., Virginia.5,6,7
     He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Frederick Co., Virginia, in the household of his parents, Willis Crane and Mary Ann Rinehart.14
     George married first Martha Jane Shade, daughter of Jacob Shade and Elizabeth [surname unknown], on 20 Nov 1866 in Morgan Co., West Virginia, with John K. Nelson officiating.8,9,10
     George and Martha appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Gainsborough Twp., Frederick Co., Virginia, enumerated 21 Sep 1870, reporting real estate valued at $350 and personal estate of $150. Their daughter Mary was listed as living with them.3
     George and Martha appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Gainesborough Twp., Frederick Co., Virginia, enumerated 21 Jun 1880. Their children Mary, John, Pleasent, George and Lilie were listed as living with them.15
     He was a farmer when he married, but by 1880 had become a retail grocer.2,16
     George and Martha moved to Springfield, Ohio, in Mar 1886.17,18
     His wife died on 4 Sep 1887.19
     He was a peddler of rugs, curtains, etc., in Ohio. He was for many years an agent for Parish & Co. of Columbus.20,21
     George married second Elvira Warden, daughter of Isaac Warden and Matilda [surname unknown], on 27 Oct 1891 in Clark Co., Ohio, with J. J. Miller, justice of the peace, officiating.11,12
     George and Elvira appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Xenia, Greene Co., Ohio, at 211 North West St., enumerated 11 Jun 1900, reporting they rented their home. Also listed in the household were three boarders, William and Ethel Spriggs, apparently relatives, perhaps grandchildren, of Elvira, and Frank Smith, all shown as day laborers.22
     George died on 16 Nov 1905 in Xenia, Ohio at age 65, at the home of his son George on Jamestown Pike.13

According to Martha's obituary she had a sixth child, but no record of that child has been found. George's obituary mentions only his second wife, 2 sons and 3 daughters surviving him.26,27
