Narrative:

Samuel James Welburn was born on 6 Dec 1877 in Boone Co., Iowa.6,7,8
He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Dodge Twp., Boone Co., Iowa, in the household of his parents, John Welburn and Lucretia Jane Agy.4 He moved to Olin, Holt Co., Nebraska, by 1886.21
Samuel married first Jennie Eldora Stingley, daughter of Walter Oregon Stingley and Mary Alice Gilmore, on 31 Mar 1897 in Laurel, Nebraska.9,10,11
Samuel and Jennie appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Laurel, Cedar Co., Nebraska, enumerated 4 Jun 1900, reporting they owned their home, which was mortgaged. Their children Lawrence and Jennie were listed as living with them.3
Samuel and Jennie moved to South Dakota by 1909.21 They appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Illinois Twp., Hyde Co., South Dakota, enumerated 19 Apr 1910, reporting that they were renting their farm. Their children Jennie, Walter and Selma were listed as living with them, as was Charles Collins, age 27, a hired man.22
Samuel and Jennie moved to Nebraska by 1918. Samuel registered for the draft for World War I on 12 Sep 1918, while living at Dixon, Dixon Co., Nebraska, reporting he was employed as a farmer in Dixon.1
His wife died on 2 Oct 1918 in Dixon, Nebraska.23,24,25
Samuel married second Olive May Owen, daughter of Samuel B. Owen and Emma A. Blake, on 6 Feb 1920 in Dixon Co., Nebraska.12
Samuel and Olive appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Concord, Dixon Co., Nebraska, enumerated 8 Mar 1920. The listing is confused, apparently because they were married between 1 Jan, the official "as of" date for the census, and 8 Mar 1920, when the enumerator came to their home. She is listed in the household preceding his, with surname Shinkel and divorced, while he was shown as widowed, which apparently would have been correct on 1 Jan. His children Walter, Selma and Jessie were listed as living with him, as were her children by her prior marriage, Ray and Doris, who are listed as his step-children, which would not have been correct on 1 Jan but would have been when the enumerator arrived.26
Samuel and Olive apparently were divorced before 1930.13
Samuel has not been located in the 1930 census. He seems to have left Dixon by then, and there is no record of him there after the early 1920's. It seems likely he was in central Oregon by 1930 as he was married there in 1931, but no other record of him there has been found.
Samuel married third Lily Mae Thornton, daughter of Henry C. Thornton and Louisa Jane Teters, in Nov 1931 in Jackson Co., Oregon.14,15,16
Samuel and Lily appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Talent, Jackson Co., Oregon, enumerated 6 May 1940, reporting they owned a home valued at $1,200. Their son Theodore was listed as living with them, as was her son Vernon by her prior marriage.27
Samuel was a well digger in Nebraska and a farmer in South Dakota and Nebraska. He was manager of Farmer's Union Elevator in Dixon Co., Nebraska, for a time and city engineer by 1921.28,29,30,31,32 By 1940, in Oregon, he was working for a hatchery. That year he reported he had worked 40 hours the last week of March, and 52 weeks the prior year, earning $400. He reported in the 1950 census he was unable to work.33,34
He registered for the draft for World War II on 27 Apr 1942, while living at Talent, Jackson Co., Oregon, reporting he was employed by Alley Bros., in Phoenix, Oregon.35
Samuel and Lily appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Talent, Jackson Co., Oregon, at 223 Gibson, enumerated 6 Apr 1950, reporting they lived in a home that was not on a farm. Their son Theodore was listed as living with them.34
Samuel died on 17 Nov 1960 in Jackson Co., Oregon, at age 82.17,18,19 He was buried in Mountian View Cemetery, Ashland, Jackson Co., Oregon.20
