     Joseph Henry Garrett was born on 11 Oct 1835 in Waringston, County Down, Ireland.6,7,8
     Joseph immigrated in 1853 to the United States and settled in Philadelphia.4
     Joseph later moved to Princeton, Kentucky.4 He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 11 Jun 1860, in the household of W. H. Bailey, a dry goods merchant, and his family.15
     Joseph married Susan Margaret Hawthorn, daughter of Rev. James Hawthorn D.D. and Jane Eliza Rannells, on 26 Feb 1863 in Caldwell Co., Kentucky, with Rev. James Hawthorn, her father, officiating.9,10,11
     Joseph and Susan appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 2 Jul 1870, reporting real estate valued at $800 and personal estate of $8,000. Their children Jane, Isabel and Ruth were listed as living with them, as were her father, and her half-sister, Anna Hawthorn, age 17.16
     He was a dry goods merchant.17,18
     Joseph died on 1 Nov 1875 in Princeton, Kentucky, at age 40.12,13 He was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky.14
