Narrative:

     Susan Margaret Hawthorn was born on 17 Jan 1836 in Woodford Co., Kentucky.8,9,10
     Her mother died on 4 Sep 1843, when Susan was 7 years old.7
     She appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., Kentucky, in the household of her father, Rev. James Hawthorn D.D., and step-mother, Sarah W. Catnack.17 She appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, in the household of her father and step-mother.18
     She was a school teacher by 1860.19
     Susan married Joseph Henry Garrett, son of John Garrett and Elizabeth Urey, on 26 Feb 1863 in Caldwell Co., Kentucky, with Rev. James Hawthorn, her father, officiating.11,12,13
     Susan and Joseph appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 2 Jul 1870, reporting real estate valued at $800 and personal estate of $8,000. Their children Jane, Isabel and Ruth were listed as living with them, as were her father, and her half-sister, Anna Hawthorn, age 17.20
     Her husband died on 1 Nov 1875 in Princeton, Kentucky.21,22
     After the death of her husband she operated a small private elementary school in her home.4
     Susan appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 16 Jun 1880. Her children Jane, Isabel, Ruth and Josephine were listed as living with her.23
     Susan appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, at Main St., enumerated 12 Jun 1900, listed as a boarder in the household of Mansel Miller, a salesman in a general store, and his wife and daughter.24
     Susan moved to Kansas after the marriage of her daughter Ruth, to live with her and her husband.4 She appeared on the 1905 State Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, in the household of her daughter Ruth and her husband, William Francis Cobb.25
     Susan died on 30 Sep 1908, at the home of her daughter, 418 Pine St., Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, at age 72.14,15,9 She was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky.16
