Anderson R. Smith was born on 23 Feb 1836 in Halifax Co., VirginiaG.4,5,6

Anderson and Sarah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Halifax Courthouse, Halifax Co., VirginiaG, in the household of his parents.12
Anderson enlisted as a private in Company F, 34th Regiment Virginia Infantry, in Halifax Co., VirginiaG, 14 Mar 1862, by Capt. Richard H. Edmonston. He mustered in at Richmond the following day, and served throughout the war.13,14
Anderson was a part of the Army of Northern Virginia that Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Lt. Gen. U. S. Grant on 9 Apr 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VirginiaG. The men were paroled that day and allowed to return home.15

His application, under provisions enacted by the Virginia General Assembly on 7 March of that year, asked for $30 annually. His application was granted 28 Jun 1900.23 On 29 May 1902 he filed a second application, now claiming total disability from his rheumatism. This application was approved 12 Sep 1902, for $15, apparently in addition to his prior application though the record does not say so.24

The General Assembly passed an act 31 Dec 1903 allowing pensioners approved as partially disabled to be rerated to full disability status. Anderson applied under that act on 14 Feb 1908. That application was approved 10 Aug 1908.28
