His application, under provisions enacted by the Virginia General Assembly on 7 March of that year, asked for $30 annually. He stated he was able to do only light work because of "Rheumatism of the back and the usual infirmities of age." His application was granted 28 Jun 1900.
23 On 29 May 1902 he filed a second application, now claiming total disability from his rheumatism. This application was approved 12 Sep 1902, for $15, apparently in addition to his prior application though the record does not say so.
