Susan H. Chastain was born about 1807 in VirginiaG.4,5,6
     Susan married Richard Edmondson on 14 May 1823 in Halifax Co., VirginiaG.7,8
     Susan and Richard appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Halifax Co., VirginiaG, enumerated 24 Oct 1850, reporting real estate valued at $13,000. Their children Richard, William, Henry, Robert, Sarah, Mary, and Howell were listed as living with them, as well as 21 slaves.9,10
     Her husband died in Sep 1859.11,12
     She was a farmer by 1860, apparently have taken on responsiblity for the farm after her husband's death.13
     Susan appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Halifax Courthouse, Halifax Co., VirginiaG, enumerated 12 Jun 1860, reporting real estate valued at $3500 and personal estate of $15,000. Her children Henry, Sarah, Robert, Mary, and Howell were listed as living with her, as well as her widowed daughter, Martha A., and her son, Martha A. Edmondson. There were also 13 slaves listed.3,14
     She appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Halifax Courthouse, Halifax Co., VirginiaG, in the household of her daughter Mary and her husband, James D. Clay.15
     Susan appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Halifax Courthouse, Halifax Co., Virginia G, in the household of James D. Clay, the husband of her late daughter Mary.16

Narrative:

Richard Edmondson was born about 1792 in VirginiaG.3,4
     Richard married Susan H. Chastain on 14 May 1823 in Halifax Co., VirginiaG.5,6
     Horse racing was evidently as feature of the culture of the area. Richard and Adam Toot sponsored a three-day racing event starting on 6 Oct 1829. On the first day featured a Proprietor's purse of $200 for a race with two-mile heats and $15 entrance fee. On the second day there was a race with three-mile heats, and a Jockey Club purse of $400, with an entrance fee of $20. The third day featured a Handy Cap worth $100. There were also an elegant saddle, bridle, martingale and whip available each day. The announcement proclaimed that there "being a number of horses in training, the course being new and the neighborhood wealthy an populous, fine sport is expected." The proprietors were furnishing stables and litter gratis.9
     Richard and Susan appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Halifax Co., VirginiaG, enumerated 24 Oct 1850, reporting real estate valued at $13,000. Their children Richard, William, Henry, Robert, Sarah, Mary, and Howell were listed as living with them, as well as 21 slaves.1,10
     He was a farmer.1
     Richard died in Sep 1859 at age ~67.7,8
