Sygurd Marineus Stephenson was born on 5 Mar 1882 in Minnesota
G.
5,6,7 Sygurd was raised with the surname Brandvold. At that time in Norway, where his parents were born, surnames were just beginning to be used. For many generations patronymic names had been used, which were formed by adding "sen" for boys or "datter" for girls to the father's given name. In church and other records the name of the farm where the family lived was noted to reduce the confusion between similar names. When immigrating to the U.S., where surnames were expected, some families chose the husband's patronymic name, others chose the name of their farm, and some chose something different. Sygurd's parents used their farm name, Brandvold, preceded when a full name was required by his an Americanized version of his patronymic name, Stephenson. For reasons unknown, Sygurd chose to use the latter after he left home.
