Narrative:

Ellen Mary Cobb was born on 11 Apr 1835 in Princeton, Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.4,5,6
     Her mother died on 11 Oct 1835, when Ellen was six months old.15,16,17
     She was probably the female aged 5 to 10 appearing on the 1840 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., KentuckyG, in the household of Henry Ballinger Machen, her grandfather.18 Ellen appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., KentuckyG, in the household of her maternal grandparents, Henry Ballinger Machen and Nancy Tarrant.19,20
     Ellen married Robert Garrett, son of John Garrett and Elizabeth Urey, on 14 Feb 1854 in Caldwell Co., KentuckyG, at Dr. P. B. McGoodwin's, with James Hawthorn officiating.2,7,8
     Ellen and Robert appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Princeton, Caldwell Co., KentuckyG, enumerated 13 Jun 1860, reporting $10,000 in personal estate. Their daughter Mary was listed as living with them, as is an un-named two-month-old girl who seems to have been a daughter who died soon after.21
     Ellen and Robert moved to Kansas about 1862.22,23,24 They appeared on the 1865 State Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., KansasG, reporting no real estate, but personal estate of $650. Their children Mary and John were listed as living with them.25
     Ellen and Robert appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., KansasG, enumerated 22 Jun 1870, reporting $13,000 in real estate and $20,000 in personal estate. Their children Mary, John, Samuel, and Frank were listed as living with them, as was Bridget Buckley, 42 year-old domestic servant born in Ireland.26
     Ellen and Robert appeared on the 1875 State Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas G. Their children Mary, John, Samuel, Frank, and Joseph were listed as living with them.27
     Ellen and Robert appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas G, enumerated 9 Jun 1880. Their children John, Samuel, Frank, and Joseph were listed as living with them, as is Mary's husband, Joseph S. Keith, and Carrie Baker, a 23-year-old servant.28
     Ellen and Robert appeared on the 1885 State Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas G. Their children Samuel, Frank, and Joseph were listed as living with them.29
     Ellen and Robert appeared on the 1895 State Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas G. Their children John and Joseph were listed as living with them, as were his niece, Ruth U. Garrett, John's wife, Annie, and Emma Jackson, a Black servant, age 39.30
     Ellen was named executrix and an heir in the will of her husband dated 6 Jun 1896, to receive for her lifetime their home on South Broadway, $5,000 in govenment bonds, and half his remaining estate after payment of expenses.31
     Ellen and Robert appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, at 500 Broadway G, enumerated 11 Jun 1900, with Ida Lamb, a 25-year-old cook also in the household.32
     Her husband died on 20 Jul 1901 at there home at 500 South Broadway, Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., KansasG.33,34,35
     Ellen appeared on the 1905 State Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., KansasG, in the household of her son Samuel and his wife and two children, living in the home of she and her late husband had owned.36
     Ellen died on 7 Dec 1906, at her residence, 500 South Broadway, Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., KansasG, at age 71.9,10,11 She was buried on 8 Dec 1906 in Mount Muncie Cemetery, Lansing, Leavenworth Co., KansasG, in the Garrett family lot.12,13,14
