Narrative:

George Washington Flora was born on 29 Dec 1831 in Pennsylvania.8,9,10 He was probably one of the two males age 5 to10 listed in the household of his father, George Flora, in the 1840 Federal Census of Air Twp., Bedford Co., Pennsylvania.18
George appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of McConnellsburg, Fulton Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 19 Jul 1850, in the household of Mark Dickson, an inn keeper, and his family. He was one of six people listed with various surnames, all apparently boarders at the inn.19
He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of McConnellsburg, Fulton Co., Pennsylvania, in the household of his parents, George Flora and Rebecca Simpson.20
George married first Mary Jane Eiker, daughter of Martha [surname unknown], before 1863.11,12,13
George registered for the draft for the Civil War, appearing on the register dated on 31 Jul 1863, while living in Chambersburg, Franklin Co., Pennsylvania, reporting he was employed as a laborer.21
George and Mary Jane Eiker moved to Maryland with their infant son Edward about 1869. They appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Hagerstown, Washington Co., Maryland, enumerated 27 Jun 1870, reporting no real estate, but personal estate of $400. Their son Edward was listed as living with them.22
George was named an heir in the will of Joseph M. Flora, his brother, dated 29 May 1877 in Funkstown, to receive upon the death of George's widow all his real property in Funkstown.23 George owned his brother a note which he repaid to his executor, totaling $255 with interest.24
George and Mary appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Hagerstown, Washington Co., Maryland, on High St., enumerated 1 Jun 1880. Their children Edward and Carrie were listed as living with them.25
His wife died on 25 Mar 1883.26
George moved to Winchester, Virginia, with his daughter Carrie, presumably before 1889 when he married his second wife there.
George married second Charity Ann Merchant, daughter of John Merchant and Ellen Catherine Allman, on 19 Dec 1889 in Winchester, Virginia.14,15,16 He and Charity Ann Merchant appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Winchester, Virginia, at 441 Fairmont Ave., enumerated 13 Jun 1900, reporting they were renting their home. Edward McPhail, an 83-year-old bank official, was listed as boarding with them.27
He was a laborer in 1850, and a coach driver by 1860. He was a brakeman on a railroad by 1870. By 1900, at age 68, he was a railroad agent.28,29,30,31,32
