     William E. Britton was born on 14 Dec 1823 in Halifax Co., Virginia.7,8,9 He was probably one of the two males under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Isham H. Britton, in the 1830 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia.16 He was probably the male age 15 to 20 listed in the household of his father, Isham H. Britton, in the 1840 Federal Census of North District, Halifax Co., Virginia.17
     He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of his parents, Isham H. Britton and Mary W. Toot.2,18
     William married first Sarah E. Ligon, daughter of P. I. Ligon, on 7 Apr 1851 in Charlotte Co., Virginia.10,11
     As administrator of his father's estate, he filled an accounting 23 Aug 1852 for the estate of Adam Toot, for whom his father had been executor.19
     William appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Scottsburg, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 29 Aug 1860, reporting $1275 in personal estate. His children Mary, Maria, Henrietta and Sarah were listed as living with him.3
