Narrative:

     Isham H. Britton was born about 1798 in Virginia.4
     Isham appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Meadsville, Halifax Co., Virginia, with a household consisting of one male age 26 to 45 (himself), and two over age 45 (unknown), one female over age 45 (unknown). There were also 13 male and 8 female slaves, and one free colored man over age 45, listed in the household.10
     Isham married Mary W. Toot, daughter of Adam Toot and Sarah King, on 10 Feb 1823 in Halifax Co., Virginia.5,6
     He was a the owner and operator of a large plantation.11,12,3
     Isham appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, with a household consisting of two males under age 5 (sons John and William), one age 15 to 20 (unknown), and one age 20 to 30 (unkown), and one age 30 to 40 (himself), one female under age 5 (daughter Sarah), and one age 20 to 30 (wife Mary). There were also 3 male slaves and 9 females.13
     Isham was named an executor in the will of Adam Toot, his wife's father, dated 12 Nov 1835.14 He had the will of his father-in-law proved 24 Jun 1839 in Halifax Co. court, and posted a bond of $20,000 as executor.15 On 5 Nov 1839 Isham purchased farm tools, a sorrel mare, furniture including two beds, and dishes totaling $160 at the sale of his wife's father's estate.16
     Isham appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of North District, Halifax Co., Virginia, with a household consisting of two males under age 5 (son Andrew and another), one age 10 to 15 (John), one age 15 to 20 (William), and one age 40 to 50 (himself), one female under age 5 (daughter Lucy), one age 10 to 15 (Sarah), and one age 30 to 40 (wife Mary). There were also 11 male and 21 female slaves.17
     Isham filed an accounting of the estate of Adam Toot as his executor 24 Oct 1842.18
     Isham and Mary appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 8 Aug 1850, reporting real estate valued at $14,000. Their children William, Sarah, John, Andrew, Lucy, Mary, Peyton, Frances and Melcajas were listed as living with them, as was William Rice, age 55. There were 46 slaves listed as well.3,19
     Isham died about 1852.7,8 He was buried in Britton Family Cemetery, Halifax Co., Virginia.9
