Narrative:
Horatio M. Knisley was born in Nov 1870 in Ontario, Canada.6,7,8 While records from his childhood show his name as Horatio, all records as an adult show his given name as some variation of Orashio, the spelling on his tombstone.3,14,15He appeared on the 1871 Federal Census of Gosfield Twp., Ontario, Canada, in the household of his parents, Daniel Knisley and Catharine Nablo.16 He appeared on the 1881 Federal Census of Gosfield Twp., Ontario, Canada, in the household of his parents.17
Horatio immigrated to the United States about 1885, though several sources show earlier dates, so it is possible his parents brought him to the U. S. eariler and then returned to Canada. Or perhaps those records are simply wrong. In any case, he was subsequently naturalized.18,19,20,21
Horatio married Almira Louisa Shaw, daughter of George Shaw and Almira Greenfield, on 22 Jan 1896 in Rockwell City, Calhoun Co., Iowa.9,10,11
Orashio and Louisa appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, enumerated 12 Jun 1900, reporting that they rented their home. Their daughter Lola was listed as living with them, as were Louisa's daughters by her prior marriage, Jennie and Stella Young.22
Orashio and Louisa appeared on the 1905 State Census of 1110 West Thomas Ave., Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, reporting that their home was valued at $700, but not indicating whether they owned it or not. Their children Lola and Lulu and her daughters Jennie and Stella by her prior marriage were listed as living with them, as was his brother John, a brick layer.23,24,25,26,27,28,29
Orashio and Louisa appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 1110 West Thomas Ave., enumerated 15 Apr 1910, reporting that they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their children Lola, Lulu and Hollie were listed as living with them.30
Orashio and Louisa appeared on the 1915 State Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, reporting that they were renting their home. This census does not identify households, but it appears that their children Lulu, Hollie and Jerome was living with them. She reported her church affiliation as Baptist, but the other members of the family did not report one. Their children Lulu, Hollie and Jerome were listed as living with them.31,32,33,34
Orashio and Louisa appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 722 Thomas Ave., enumerated 3 Jan 1920, reporting that then owned their home, free of mortgage. Their children Hollie and Jerome were listed as living with them, as was Roy Spencer, widower of their daughter Lulu, and his sons Melvin and David.35
Orashio and Louisa moved to Missouri between 1920 and 1925 as they do not appear in the 1925 Iowa census. They appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Nodaway Twp., Nodaway Co., Missouri, enumerated 3 Apr 1930, reporting that they were renting their home. Their son Jerome was listed as living with them, as was David Spencer, age 12, son of their late daughter Lulu.14
He was a laborer most of his life. He reported his occupation as day laborer in 1900, laborer in 1905, and laborer in a seed house by 1910.36,37,38 He was a teamster by 1915, reporting that he had been out of work four months in the prior year, but had earned $600. By 1920 he was again a laborer, working for the city.31,39 He was a farmer after they moved to Missouri.40
Horatio died in 1932.12 He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, next to his wife.13
