Immigrating to the United States --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Johann immigrated to the United States, but when is unknown. No record of his immigration has been found. No record of his first wife in the U.S. has been found, so it seems likely she died in Europe, but no record of that has been found. His daughter Emma immigrated about 1856, about the time of his second marriage, suggesting he had immigrated earlier and sent for her when he re-married.19,20
In the United States he "Americanized" his given name, being known as John M.3,21,22,15
John married second Christina Baum, daughter of Johann Heinrich Nicolaus Baum and Anna Margaretha Schreid, on 7 Jan 1856 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, with Rev. Conrad Gahn, pastor of the Buckeye St. Church, officiating.8,9,10
According to family lore, he was at one time a cook for Culver Military Academy, which is located at Culver, Indiana.23
John and Christina appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky, enumerated 25 Jun 1860, reporting $1,500 in real estate and $500 in personal property. His daughter by his previous marriage, Emma, was listed as living with them, as were Rodolph Walker, a 21-year-old baker, and George Hatgen, a 16-year-old baker apprentice.24
He was a baker in Covington by 1860, at 642 Main St. by 1861, the earliest city directory available, and most likely before that.25,26,27 By 1861 John and Christina were living at 642 Main St., above his bakery. They continued to live there until his death, and she did for a time after that.28,29

Getting His Step-Son-In-Law Into the Business --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

John's step-son-in-law William Fenker, joined him in the bakery business by 1866. That year they were listed as Frey & Fenker, bakers and confectioners, at 2 Pike St.30,31 The firm was listed again in 1868, listing that address and 642 Main St., the location of John's prior bakery. It appears that John retired from the business soon after that. The following year both locations are listed under William Fenker, and John's listings in the city directory never again included an occupation.32,33,34
Her daughter Louisa and her husband, William Fenker, and their family moved into the same building Christina and John had been living in by 1870.35
John and Christina appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky, enumerated 20 Jun 1870, living in the same dwelling as her daughter Louisa and her husband.36
John left a will dated 7 May 1877 stating he was of Covington, Kentucky, in which he left his Gustav Doré Picture Bible to his daughter Emma. He also left her $2,000, to be paid her one year after his death, after she provided sucurity to the satisfaction of the county court that she would provide an annuity of $120 per year to his widow for her lifetime. He left his wife, in addition to the annuity, all the rest of his estate. He appointed his wife as his executor.37
John died on 22 May 1877 in Covington, Kentucky, at age 61.11,12,13 He was buried on 24 May 1877 in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington, Kentucky, in the William Fenker lot.14,15
His will was probated on 25 Jun 1877 in Kenton Co. court.37
