Narrative:

     Vernon George Attig was born on 14 May 1921 in Lowpoint, Woodford Co., Illinois.6,7,8
     He appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Wilburn, Marshall Co., Illinois, in the household of his parents, Ralph L. Attig and Lydia B. Schneider.4
     Vernon registered for the draft for World War II on 16 Feb 1942, while living at Eureka, Woodford Co., Illinois, reporting he was employed as a farmer.2
     Vernon was inducted into the U.S. Army on 19 Sep 1942. He served three years and three months, including 31 months in the European Theater of Operations. He was stationed in France and North Africa, earning two Bronze Battle Stars, and was discharged with the rank of technical sergeant 5 on 28 Dec 1945.3
     Vernon married Dorothy May Glabe, daughter of John Henry Glabe and Nancy E. Burroughs, on 28 Nov 1946.9,10
     Vernon and Dorothy appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Washington, Tazewell Co., Illinois, at 112 Franklin, enumerated 13 Apr 1950, reporting they lived in a home that was not on a farm. Their daughter Doris was listed as living with them.12
     He worked for Garber Motor Co., reporting in the 1950 census he had worked 50 hours the prior week. He later was co-owner of Jack and Vern's Shell service station. He retired in 1989 after 26 years as superintendent of public works for the city of Washington.13,3
     His wife died on 30 Dec 2012 in Washington, Illinois.14,15
     Vernon died on 15 Jan 2014 in Washington, Illinois, at age 92, at his home.3 He was buried in Glendale Cemetery, Washington, Illinois.11
