After the death of her husband, Mary's sister Victoria, also recently widowed, lived with her until Victoria committed suicide in the house in 1895. Unwilling to speak of the event, the formerly close relationship between the Machen and Sublette families was suspended for some 80 years before descendants re-established connections.28
After her sister's death, Mary operated a boarding house in her red brick Queen Anne style home to keep income coming in. She was a genteel Southern lady trying to keep things going.29,30
