Narrative:

     Dr. Nathan C. Neer was born on 20 May 1839 in Virginia.5,6,7
     He was probably one of the three males under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Jesse Neer, in the 1840 Federal Census of District 1, Loudoun Co., Virginia.13
     He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Loudoun Co., Virginia, in the household of his parents, Jesse Neer and Matilda Kelb.14
     He moved to Missouri with his parents before 1860. Nathan appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Sni-A-Bar Twp., Jackson Co., Missouri, enumerated 6 Jul 1860, in the household of Dr. D. A. Neer, age 26, reporting he was a student of medicine.15
     Nathan enrolled in Co. D, 17th Arkansas Infantry 18 Nov 1861 at Fayetteville, Arkansas, for 12 months, as a private.16 He was appointed a hospital steward 13 Dec 1861, detached from his company, and left in Little Rock.17
     He was transferred to Arsenal Hospital in Little Rock 1 Jun 1862. On 15 Jun he was assigned as clerk in the Medical Purveyor's office. While there he was given extra pay as the only detached man in that office, making it "impracticable to take rations in kind."18
     The last record in his military file is a pay receipt dated 1 Aug 1863, in Little Rock, for July pay. Little Rock was taken by Union forces the following month, and it appears Nathan returned home soon after.19
     Nathan registered for the draft for the Civil War, appearing on the register dated in Nov 1863, while living in Sni-a-bar Twp., Jackson Co., Missouri, reporting he was a student.20
     Nathan married first Alice R. Cobb, daughter of James Dyer Cobb and Rachael Isaacs Jones, on 18 Jul 1864 in Lafayette Co., Arkansas, with Rev. Julius A. Stanley offciating.8
     His wife apparently died before 1869.21,22
     Nathan married Henningham Watkins on 3 Feb 1869 in Desha Co., Arkansas, at the home of her father, with Rev. Henry C. Lay officating.9,10,11
     Nathan and Henningham appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Silver Lake Twp., Desha Co., Arkansas, enumerated 22 Aug 1870, reporting no real estate but personal estate of $300. Their son Edwin was listed as living with them, shown as Arvin.23
     He was a farmer and physician in Silver Lake.24
     Nathan and Henningham moved to Texas by 1880.
     Nathan and Henningham appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Weatherford, Parker Co., Texas, at Headgate Street, enumerated 28 Jun 1880. Their son Edwin and his daughter Alice were listed as living with them, as were L. W. Hart, a 19-year-old clerk, and J. J. Sharp, a 39-year-old carpenter.25
     He operated a drug store.26
     Nathan died on 10 Feb 1896 at age 56.7 He was buried in City Greenwood Cemetery, Weatherford, Parker Co., Texas.12
